Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Duet front loader and I've noticed that my towels get stiffer the more I wash them. I used to use liquid detergent and fabric softner, but the repair man suggested I use powder soap and discontinue liquid fabric softner and use the sheets in the dryer. I've made these changes and purchased new towels, but now the new towels are starting to feel the same. Also, is there any truth to powder detergent being better than liquid for front end loading machines? I'm using the HE stuff.

No truth to powder being better .fabric softeners on the towels is fine it does help keep them soft they just don't absorb moisture as well.. I belive you biggest issue is over drying the towels, use a lower temp setting on dryer and do Not trust auto dry settings for towels, expermint with timed settings, if towels are not dry you can always add a few more minutes, but over temp and over dry will stiffen and age them prematurely

I too have tried everything to soften my towels, they keep getting stiffer and more scratchy. I've changed soap, fabric softeners, tried no softeners and no soap, vinegar, changing drying temp, hanging them outside. Nothng works. It finally occured to me, that this only started happening with the front load washer, never the top loader. My experiment seems to be working - the washer spins them so well that it flattens the loops on the towels. Try reducing the spin speed to medium. It seems to be working.

Don’t wait for the machine to jam to look into your filter.

You can use Affresh to clean your front loader. Deposits of soap and other such things can be stuck around the inside tub of your washer. Try this product, it works great on all front loaders. Use very hot water with the Affresh pellet with no clothes and run the machine through a cycle. Also helps with any stagnant water smells. Put the Affresh pellet inside the machine, not in the soap dispenser.

You can give me a ‘very helpful’ rating for the free help, can't you. Thanks.

Towel mildew smell is being transferred from the washer. The washer must be cleaned first. The problem is not "brand specific" all clothes washers have mold growth to a certain degree. Bleach or vinegar will kill the mold inside your washer but won't remove it or the residue it grows on thereby making the situation worse because it leaves a "base" for more detergent to collect on and more mold will grow.

Washing machine mold / mildew odor is caused by:
#1 cause is overuse of detergents. Detergent companies are notorious for instructing to use too much detergent. Especially with soft water or when using liquid detergent no more than 1 tbsp of any detergent should be used.
#2 most common cause is using fabric softener because it's dispensed in the rinse cycle and will coat the inside of the outer tub with residue that is a food source for mold to grow.
#3 using only cold water for washing is fine but makes preventative maintenance very important. A weekly hot soak will dissolve odor-causing residue from inside your washer.
#4 not using the washer. If the clothes washer isn't used very often maintenance is especially important. If leaving for a vacation it's a good idea to clean your washer. Do a search to "remove washer odor" to read just how big the problem is. There are all natural washer cleaners that will also remove mildew odor from towels and clothing after the washer has been cleaned.

Allergic to detergent for front loaders

I have always used regular Tide powder in mine and my kids use Tide liquid in it. You just need to use about half as much. My man is a motor head so he gets DIRTY and I have three teens so I wash a lot of very dirty clothes. My clothes get very clean and I have never purchased the "special" Detergent.

I have had my Duet for three years.

It obviously is backed up or splashed in from the wash. And if it is just water why worry about it.
