Question about Texas Instruments TI-86 Calculator

From the manual:

You entered an argument with an inappropriate dimension.

You entered a matrix or vector dimension less than 1 or greater than 255 or a non-integer.

You attempted to invert a matrix that is not a square matrix.

If you can't figure it out from here, please reply to this post telling us what you were graphing or attempting to graph when you got this error.

You're probably trying to graph a function that does not involve stat plot features. You can correct this by turning off the stat plot features. Press "2ND" "STAT PLOT" and then select 4:PlotsOff.

I have a TI-83 and there has been a dark spot on my screen for several years and it has not been a problem. Try to use yours for as long as possible unless the screen is unviewable.

You're probably trying to graph a function that does not involve stat plot features. You can correct this by turning off the stat plot features. Press "2ND" "STAT PLOT" and then select 4:PlotsOff.

The actual graph depends on the constants (parameters) that are in the equation. Try playing with the dimensions of the window by zooming in or zooming out.

The most interesting part of the graph is the region near the maximum or minimum.

Here is a graph of the function y=X^2-5X 13 when drawn with standard window dimensions

Not very revealing. However if you press the Zoom key and select [2:ZoomIn] you see this (no changes) but the calculator is ready to accept your input concerning the new center of the graph.

At this stage, use the Arrow keys to move the center of the graph to another point as in the next screen capture.

Notice the new center as a sign on the screen and its coordinates at the bottom. By pressing [ENTER] you get this

If you keep Zooming in you may end up having something that does not look like a parabola anymore.

To summarize: Use the Zoom In or Zoom Out functions or find where the minimum/maximum is, center the graph on that point and modify the windows dimensions (Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, and Ymax) so as to get as much of the interesting part of the graph as possible.

Try using the standard Zoom.

If you are drawing Y=f(X) functions, press [ZOOM][6:ZStandard]. The window dimensions will be [-10, 10] for X and the same for Y.

If you are drawing polar graphs, in addition to the X,Y windows dimensions, you have Theta min =0 and Theta max =2*Pi =(6.28)

If you are drawing Y=f(X) functions, press [ZOOM][6:ZStandard]. The window dimensions will be [-10, 10] for X and the same for Y.

Press GRAPH F1 to enter the equation editor.

Plot1 Plot2 Plot3 on the top line of the equation editor displays the on/off status of each stat plot. When a plot name is highlighted, the plot is on. To toggle the status, press up, left, and right to place the cursor on the name, then press ENTER.

Hello,

You were lucky not to see the dimension problem with the TI83Plus.

To get rid of the message, reset you calculator to DEFAULT configuration. It will erase nay garbage in the registers and you can draw your graph.

Most likely you're trying to graph a function while you have the stat plot turned on. Turn off the stat plot and try it again.

This just happened to me too after i tried to plot some statistics. Press 2nd, +(STAT), then F3 for plot and see that you have all the STAT PLOTS turned off.
