Each unit should be replaced with its own circuit breaker, it is
not wise or up to code to do what you want to do. Do the smart thing and replace them with what they already have.

That's a complicated system that needs a qualified technician to service it. Lots of people can install them and they run fine, for a few years. Your indoor unit, operating on 2 heat elements, will feel like its blowing cold air even though its heating, just not so well. And not like you are accustomed to. Each element (5kw)=22.7amps, on average. So 3 elements operating should trip a breaker. Its probably been operating on 2 heat element plus the heat pump. And now you have trouble with the heat pump. If you can't TRUST the guys working on your equipment, try someone else. A second opinion. Normally a 3 or 4 ton unit will have 15kw heat installed, heatpump or not. 5 ton, 20kw. If yours is a 3-4ton, cooling, the 100amp(or normally two 60 amp) breaker should have been installed upon equipment change out. If yours is blowing cold all the time, something is wrong with your heatpump. The electric heat inside operates only when the heatpump can't keep up(real cold outside), the heatpump is in defrost(then it's actually in cooling mode), or if you have the tstat in aux/em. heat. Try a local trane dealer? Of a technician with 15-20 yrs under their belt. A trane dealer should have trane tech support also. BIG HELP!!!

Hello, my heat pump is a 4 ton unit, it heats ok but it keeps tripping one of the breakers, the 40 amp cooling breaker. I have put a new thermostate, it keeps running after the breaker is tripped and the...

Hello Jack,

Let me see if I have this right. Your heat pump keeps triping the breaker that is going to your airhandler. The Heatpump is on its on breaker and can not trip the breaker on your air-handler. However, the 40 amp breaker is to you heat pump its self (the outside unit). The thermstat is not the porblem as all it does is call for heat or cool. The problem can be one or a cobination of three things the contactor, the run capcitor or the breaker is weak.

The first thing I would do is replace the breaker as if it has tripped more than twice it needs to be replaced. Then I would look at the contactor, it is located underneath the service panel it will have some low voltage wires on the sides and a black and white wire running to it from the disconect box. If you notice the contacts are chared (little copper points in the middle of the contactor) I would replace it. If the contactor looks good I would remove the capcitor (carefully not to touch to contacts at once as they hold a charge) and take if to the local parts house and have it tested.

I hope that I have asnwered you question and you are able to take care of the problem. Thank you for using FIxya and do not hesitate to ask more questions.

Heat pump not running

check your house circuit breakers first that should be labeled heatpump or outdoor unit
make sure it is on and or not tripped
then if you have a box outside near the outdoor unit open it up and see if there is a breaker or maybe fuses that could be blown

Electric outlet does not work

LETS START HERE , MOST OF THE GFCI BREAKERS WILL SOMETIMES RUN THROUGH THE BATH ROOM OUTLETS AND THEN OUTSIDE IF YOU HAVE A GFCI IN THE BATH OR LAUNDRY OR BASEMENT OR GARAGE MAKE SURE NONE OF THE RESET BUTTONS ARE IN THE TRIP POSITION THE NEC CODE CALLS FOR ALL OF THE LISTED PLACES AS WELL AS CRAWL SPACES AND NEXT TO AC/HEATPUMP TO BE ALL GFCI AND TO SAVE MONEY AND WIRE MOST OF THESE ARE DAISEY CHAINED TOGETHER TO SAVE MONEY SO THEY PUT ONE CLOSE TO THE BREAKER PANEL AND FEED THE REST OFF IT IT WILL BE A GOOD CK I HAVE HAD MANY CALLS FOR THIS THROUGH THE YEARS

If your Heatpump's fan isn't running but your compressor is, your fan motor is out. If nothings happening at all ensure your getting power to heatpump (ex: breaker tripped, fuses blown on outside power switch, or fuses blown in breaker box?)
