Take the existing RAM out of the computer, and look at the sticky label.
You could see "DDR266" or "DDR333" or "DDR400",
or "PC2100" or "PC2700" or "PC3200".
Take the RAM to a computer-store, and show it to them,
and they will sell you compatible RAM.
Tell them many RAM slots you have, and how many are "empty".
Windows XP requires 512MB of RAM, and is much-happier with 1024MB of RAM.
Windows Vista requires 1024MB of RAM, and is much-happier with 2048MB or even 3072MB of RAM.
