Question about Paragon 4001-00 24-hr Timer Control 120v Ac Cd101

1 Answer

I have the # 4001 - 00 timer (other info on timer is TD-1744OG) My timer is being used to turn on and off specific lights for an apartment complex - ie front entrance, back entrance and so on. My problem is this: When the power goes off for any lengthy period of time, the control for the lights gets out of whack sort of speak. Then I have to travel 30 miles to the apartment complex to reset things again. Is there anyway to get around this problem, perhaps a timer with a battery backup or something?

4001-00 is 120Volt mechanical timer.
I suggest replacing old mechanical time piece with newer electronic time clock with back up carryover.

Intermatic EH10 is 120V has power carryover
Tork EW103B has selectable voltage with capacitor carryover
Sylvania SA300 is 120V has backup battery carryover and also has dawn-to-dusk feature

Coati timer 13201

This is old timer since it still uses batteries.
Replace AAA batteries.
This timer also has preset programs. User cannot change preset programs which is the strangest thing I've ever heard about a timer, except vacation timers. It appears the timer turns on-off 6 times each day for no apparent reason that shows in manual.
Moreover, the timer has very complex instructions, whereas other timers are far easier to program.
Buy another timer.

The timer went out and the time of day no longer changes. I can manually turn the lights on by rotating the switch on top of the timer. How would I go about replacing the timer?

Question posted under Intermatic/Malibu power pack.
Timer clock modules are not sold separately for this timer.
Some people report being able to take the clock module apart, cleaning gears and re-lube with Vaseline. Mark parts carefully so re-assembly is easy.
Power packs have 1-5 year warranty.
Another work around is to buy cheap plug-in timer, set power pack to override, and then plug power pack into cheap timer.

1-channel FMD Intermatic timer

FMD timers are complex to program, and if timer does not program correctly, then check voltage and polarity of circuit. These timers typically have 1 year limited warranty and can be affected by power surge.
If you have 2-channel timer, then each contact on relay will turn on-and-off at different schedules.
Make sure you don't wire both legs of a 240Volt circuit to to different relays, or the circuit will not turn on-off as expected. To control 240V, just turn off one leg using one of the relays.

If your exact timer does not show, add a comment and describe everything about the timer buttons and appearance, and I will search my files for possible manual.

Can't figure out how to set the times to turn power off/on.The metal trippers seem to be permanently in there.

Remove dial from body of timer.
So now the timer is apart in 2 pieces.
Silver ON trippers and brass OFF trippers can be removed.

Place trippers in times you want timer to operate.
OFF trippers have to be at least 2 hours apart.
ON trippers have to be at least 2 hours apart
Minimum on-off function is one hour

Snap timer back together.

Tripper rotates around with dial.
When tripper contacts on-off lever, it physically moves lever like turning on light switch.
ON tripper moves lever one direction.
OFF tripper moves lever opposite direction.

How do you set this timer

Timer shown is E1020 or E1010
This timer wires into a wall box
Grasp time dial firmly and pull until it comes free from timer.
Remove all silver ON trippers and brass OFF tripper using pencil or paper clip

Program the timer by inserting trippers
The minimum set time for this timer is 1/2 hour
OFF trippers should be spaced at least 2 hours apart from another OFF
ON trippers should be spaced at least 2 hours apart from another ON

Push time dial back onto timer
Current time lines up with time line located at top of timer dial

Next to the time line is the manual override.
Use manual override to reverse the timer program, so if lights are OFF, manual override will turn them ON.

An apartment complex where I do maintenance has intermatic outdoor timer, a very simple mechanical timer . It keeps good time tabs are set for off and on and yet sometimes the lights are on past the off...

Timer pins make physical contact with a metal lever that has a bit of grease. When the metal lever is pushed far enough by the pin it clicks into 'on' or 'off' position. The lever moves a slider on back of timer. The slider pushes and pulls the brass-copper contacts located on back of timer.

The metal lever is connected to manual override. So the manual override changes position with each on-off function.

1) When you click the manual override back and forth, is it loose? Or does it snap crisp and clean with no play? This would tell the general condition of the lever mechanism.

2) It seems the pins are a softer metal than the metal lever ... but if the metal lever is worn, the pins might slip past without turning off lights. You can watch the turn-off sequence and see what happens.

3) The contacts on back of timer are pushed together and pulled apart by the slider, so burned points would not cause the lights to stay on ... unless the stop that holds the stationary contact is somehow broken. You would have to take timer out of box and click it back and forth to see what the contacts are doing.

In some apartment complexes, where everbody is in one building it
is possible that you are cooling more than just your apartment. If you have ductwork try to follow it and see if it does not lead to a
entrance or a hallway.

If it is cooling your apartment and you cannot turn it off, tell him you
cannot control the temperature. If you have a breaker panel in your
apartment, locate it and find the breaker labeled AC and turn it off
for a day, if other people complain and you are told to turn your
breaker back on. Then I guess you are paying to help cool part
of your building

Cannot get the timer switch to function w/ 3-way Levitron NOM 057

When installing a digital timer switch into a 3-way lighting circuit, you typically have to install a jumper wire across the "travelers" on the 3-way switch at the other end of the circuit, in order to get the timer to function.

If you have an Intermatic brand timer, the jumper is included with the timer switch, usually it will be a small, about 2-3 inches long wire with fork terminals on each end.

You should have the power turned off before installing the jumper. Also, there is a distance limit (75-80 feet of wiring) as to how far apart the two (2) switches can be from one another, in order for the timer to work (with the installed jumper).

Normally, the travelers are one the same side of a 3-way switch, but you can use a voltage detector to confirm which wires are which (prior to turning off the power) to make installing the jumper easier. If you contact the manufacturer of your particular timer, they can email you a owners guide/installation pamphlet that shows the proper installation procedures for your timer switch.

If you have an Intermatic product, you can use the link below to contact them for the needed info.

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!
