We have rebalanced the clothes sometimes 3 or 4 times per load. I have put a level on the top of the washers and it is level in all diections. That isn't the issue, am wondering if the washer is out of whack or has a broken part

  • clark_crain Sep 09, 2010

I have replaced many parts on washing machine over the years. I have replaced belts and bearings before. I am reading bad things on the web about maytag performa machines.

Sorry, I didn't respong sooner. I have the washer in my garage and the fron panel is off. I can get the machine to spin but not agitate. It will spin fine for about 30 seconds then go into unbalance mode. I believe that something is under the agitator. I don't know how to take the agitator out to check. I can't get manuals from MAytag, WHilrlpool or anyone. Need advice.

I have the washer apart except for the trasmisson. I want to know if the machine should agitate without the tub in the machine. If not, does it need a switch engaged in order for the trasmission to agitate. If there isn'e a switch needed for the trasminssion to agitate then I believe the trasmission is faulty. ALso the manual stated that the pulley should rotate counter clockwise when in spin mode. does that mean when agitating it should be roatating clockwise then counter clockwise? Thanks again for the manual.

Yes it rotates clock wise during agitating and counter clockwise during spin cycle. But if its not rotating then the transmission and agitator has to be checked. Also check the break package which is mounted above pulley located on bottom of machine. This main drive pulley has a cam riser which releases the brake in the spin cycle. The motor turns in one direction with that brake lockedfor wash, but it turns in the opposite direction for spin.As per you the pulley is turning in one direction that is in spin cycle so the brake riser getting jammed in other direction can be possible.Click this link directly for more help:-- http://sites.google.com/site/sublimeappliancerepair/washer-will-not-spin/basic-washer-problems/help-my-washer-is-flooding-the-house/maytag-washer-notes------------- You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com

Here's the service manual you need. You need the service manual instead of discussing the issue here because this is not a simple problem that can be resolved by exchange of thoughts like this.

The pulley indeed turns clockwise when in agitate mode then reverses into counterclockwise when in spin mode as stated in the manual. The transmission does not have any switch for it to get into agitate mode. The rotation of the pulley in the clockwise direction activates mechanisms that engage the transmission gears to agitate mode. It also engage the brake to prevent the drum from spinning. The reversal of the pulley rotation disengages the brake and the gears to advance the cycle from agitate to spin mode.

There are two things that come to mind. One is that the clothes in the washing machine are not balanced...meaning there are more clothes on one side of the washing machine than the other. The second thing is that the little feet under the washing machine are not level, therefore making your washing machine not level and balanced, causing it to shake and jump when it's in the spin cycle.

Machine goes out of balance & vibrates on spin cycle

Some models of top-load washers use tub dampening straps to cushion the movement of the tub during the spin cycle. There are four straps attached to the top of the tub and to each corner of the cabinet

Also There are four suspension rods that suspend the tub and allow the tub to free float. If the suspension rods are noisy, there will be a squeaking noise during wash. You can fix this by putting bearing (lithium base) grease in the cup that each rod rests in. If it continues to squeal replace all four rods the cups come with the rods, replace them as well.

If your washer has a loud banging noise during spin the balance weight may be loose. This weight is to counter act the weight of the motor so you will find the weight directly behind the motor. Sometimes simply tightening the bolts will fix your issue but if the bolts are stripped out get some bolts slightly longer than the original bolt to allow you to put a locking nut on the bottom side of the mounting plate. If the weight is broken replace it.

Lastly Washer vibration can be caused by a broken counter balance spring. Ur washer may be equipped with one or more counter balance springs which help to absorb the natural movement of the spinning tub. If a counter balance spring fails the tub might lean in one direction more than another and it will shake and cause vibration.

When its on a wash cycle it does not spin flasing letters come up

Flashing letters are probably an error code. Check your owner's manual for troubleshooting. If still in warrantee, call the Customer service line. It's possible it does not like the out of balance load in the spin cycle. Try to rebalance and try the spin again. May take several tries to get the right balance.

The digital timer on the machine will say 1 minute to go, but the machine will run on the spin cycle for 6 to 8 minutes before it finishes. Is there a part I can replace to correct this problem?

Your washer displays an estimate of time remaining in the current wash cycle. That estimate is based on the load finishing without any delays. Prior to going into a high speed spin, your washer "tests" the load balance by either rocking or slowing rotating.

If it senses and off balance condition, it will attempt to "rebalance" the load by itself and then retest, rebalance, etc. until it is satisfied that the load is as balanced as possible. Then it begins to spin. When your washer takes longer than is predicted in the display, it is because of this.

Happy washing...

Is off balance during the spin cycle mor often

I have a 10yr old Maytag Atlantis model MAV7258AWW. Here is how I solved my balance problem. It appeared that I had two problems. One was that it would not spin fast, the second was that it would spin off balance. To get the washer to spin fast like it should I had to open the lid then close it, re-engaging the spin cycle. I opened the top and watched the motor engage in the spin cycle. with the top open, I would open and close the lid activating the lid switch. Each time I closed the lid I noticed that the motor would move a little bit more on its glides to tighten the belt. Sort of like a automatic adjuster. The motor is designed to pivot one way for the agitator the other way for spin. If the motor does not pivot correctly, the belt will not tighten and will slip. I removed the front panel, cleaned and lubed the pivot area. Now the motor glides on the pivots like it should. I ran the spin cycle and the motor slid all the way to one side like it should, the belt tightens and the spin cycle spins. Now that the spin cycle works, quess what?? The balance problem is fixed as well. It appears that the reason that the tub was going off balance was because the belt was slipping not spinning the tub at maxium speed as designed causing the off balance problem. The tub was not spinning fast enough causing the off balance problem. I have ran several loades in the washer and not a problem. I did replace the snubber, it was worn out but it still spun off balance. I hope this helps to all who have a balance problem.

Kenmore washer series 70 shakes wildly during spin during cycle

I have the same kenmore and have experience this before. It is unbalanced. Get a spirit level to check for balance. To rebalance, empty the washer (so it's not heavy), lean over the washer and grab the back, tilt it forward and the auto balancing legs should reposition themselves. Re-check for balance using the spirit level. If still out, adjust the front feet of the washer by screwing the legs up or down (using a wrench). This will cure the problem (unless you have a very unbalanced load of towels for instance). Good luck

GE WSM2780W Stacked Washer spin cycle

With no clothing in the wash tub take the following steps:
1. remove the front cover from the wash tub
2. run a full cycle of laundry and observe the tub's behavior

Potential Solutions:
A. If the tub begins to shake wildly during a full wash cycle with no clothing in it then you will need to adjust the 3 large springs on each side of the tub until the unit is working in a more-balanced position. This is simple to do by hand. If the tub appears to be shaking too far forward, then unhook the 2 large springs in back so they are tighter. Then run a full wash cycle again with no clothing.
* note: there are smaller springs too - you don't have to adjust these to fix your issue

B. If the tub works fine with no clothing during a full wash cycle, then try to load your clothing in a more balanced fashion. For example: if your wash load is only a small kitchen or bath rug then when the unit spins it will spin off balance with a wet & heavy item on only one side of the tub.

C. If you'd like to replace the 3 large springs, I can get you the part numbers. There are specific springs for both sides of the wash tub and they are different part numbers. The full replacement of the 3 large springs can be done by hand.

thanks,
Chris I.
