Tips for First-Time Investors in Mutual Funds

Before choosing a mutual fund, as with any investment, it's always important to do your homework:
Pay attention to fees. Some may be as high as 2%.
Diversify if possible.
Allow for annual adjustments, don't just set your mutual fund. Invest time to study your fund's performance and make changes as necessary.
If you have a short-term goal, pick a debt fund. Long-term investors can choose more equity than others.
Always balance risk and return. Think about the level of risk you are willing to take with your investment. In theory,
avoid funds that have only recently been doing very well for a a short period of time. It will most likely not do as well later on since it is unlikely to keep up such a strong performance. Instead, look for funds that consistently rank highly.
Don't be too quick to get rid of a fund that starts to lose money unless the losses have been consistent. Otherwise, hang in there, and give it time to imprtove. All funds are bound to have an off-year.
Analyze the funds expenses and fees, Fees can have a serious affect on the returns you will get on an investment. Search for mutual fund cost calculators online to help you with this.
If you need to earn money relatively quickly, say within a year, you should avoid investing in volatile funds, which are far less reliable. These types of funds usually require some time before they earn you money.
Ask if there have been any recent changes in the mutual fund's operations: Have strategies or advisers changed? (This is especially important if the manager responsible for a successful performance is no longer managing the fund.) Has the fund merged with another fund? All of these factors can affect perormance, so make sure you are well- informed.
Find out out how easy or difficult it will be to buy and sell shares and whether there are fees for doing so. In general, anything that will require extra work from the fund manager ( for instance working with overseas funds) will probably incur a higher fee. Check if any special services such as toll-free numbers or automatic investment programs are offered.
I hope you found these tips helpful!

My daughter set up my PayPal account with my bank details but when I tried to buy something but PayPal replied, we're sorry your PayPal balance and existing payments methods are insufficient to complete...

Make sure there are funds in your PayPal account. If not, transfer funds from your bank account to PayPal.
Existing payment methods include credit cards. Do you have credit cards linked to PayPal? If not, link at least one, it saves a lot of hassle.
PayPal used to transfer funds automatically from your bank acct to PayPal if the funds for a transaction were insufficient, but that has changed - you have to make sure your PP acct is in credit.

What is an Exchange Traded Fund (EFT)? I've heard about them but am a little confused.

EFTs (Exchange Traded Funds) are funds that track particular financial indexes (like the NASDAQ-100 or the Dow Jones). You can buy shares in a specific EFT and that's then linked to the index.

Are there different types of mutual funds?

I live in the US so this is how it works here, I'm not sure about other countries. In the US, there are 3 main types of mutual funds.1. open end funds 2. Unit investment trusts 3. Closed end trusts. Mutual funds will usually refer to open end types of funds. Exchange-traded funds are open end funds or unit investment trusts that trade using an exchange.

I'm from the Philippines and I always want to buy online but the problem is i don't have a Credit Card and Debit Card. The only thing that i have is Bank Account. So i can use PayPal? How?

Hi there,
Paypal uses funds that are added to your Paypal account or withdrawn from your bank account/credit card/debit card.
If the only thing you have is a Filipino bank account (BDO, RCBC etc ) you can withdraw funds from the bank account to your Paypal account.
To do so, you must first add your bank account to your Paypal account by going to Paypal, where it says My Account > Profile > Add or Edit Bank Account.
Here you enter your banking details as required, Paypal will make sure that it is your account by depositing a small amount of money to your account (takes 3-5 days) and then asking you to verify that amount before the bank account is confirmed and linked to your Paypal account.
After you've linked your bank account to your Paypal account you can then withdraw funds to it by going to My Profile > Add Funds. This process also takes 3-5 days to complete.
The funds withdrawn to your Paypal account from your bank account will now allow you to make instant payments with funds direct from your Paypal account.
Alternatively if you make a payment for anything you buy online and wish to pay with your Paypal account and don't have any funds, Paypal will deduct the funds from your linked bank account. The process usually takes 3-5 days to complete.
Hope I have been of assistance to you, Cheers ! :)
