Question about Maxent MX-42HPM20 42 in. Plasma HDTV
The popping sound was a capacitor that failed the big way. Since the sound works just fine and the image faded (it didn't just dissapeared instantly) then the problem is in the backlighting - either the inverter or the output line that is powering it has failed.
This will be relatively easy to fix and not very expensive but must be done by a pro - he will replace most of the capacitors in your tv (the one that failed and all the other because they are also nearing their end).
