Hi,
Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator
do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other
things that can go wrong.

I\'ve been struggling trying to keep our 2 goldens dog hair from the coils of our 8 year old Kenmore side by side with "W" compressor coils, but like everyone else was unable to clean past the first set of coils.

I came up with this solution that worked to get much of the big stuff, hair and bunnies, off of the further back coils. Not perfect but much better than nothing.

Removing the back lower panel I was able to snake a crevice attachment from our vacuum down the right side of the coils (left side looking from back)

My freezer and refrig are - 1aa41853-285c-463f-bd91-ac26c363d61a.jpg

Looking from front"

I made a compressed air contraption to blow the dust/hair across the coils using a compressed air nozzle that I added a 10" long tube and a 90 degree deflector

From the front of the fridge, on the left side of the coils, I snaked the compressed air nozzle towards the back and started directing the air stream blowing towards the vacuum crevice tool at the opposite side of the coils.

The compressed air dislodged the hair/dust enough that the vacuum was able to suck it away. Again, not perfectly but certainly much better than I was able to clean the coils in the past.

I suppose you could use a can of compressed air and add some sort of deflector if you don\'t have a compressor.

I then got to thinking how to prevent the dust from accumulating on the coils, I\'m going to try an air conditioner filter. I cut it slightly oversized to fit the front opening then split it in half to make it thinner for more air My freezer and refrig are - 7a2fbc41-ef6b-4a4c-8961-a892df9da8ab.jpgfixya.net/uploads/images/7a2fbc41-ef6b-4a4c-8961-a892df9da8ab.jpg" alt="7a2fbc41-My freezer and refrig are - 938facae-8d39-4f2b-b07c-82f5e4219751.jpgh_mi" /> 938facae-8d39-4f2b-b07c-82f5e4219751.jpg

Picture taken before making the filter thinner.

For years I had my calendar remind me monthly to vacuum the coils but now hopefully I\'ll be able to simply change the air filter.

Clean the condenser coils under the frig. Use a vacuum to suck off dust from the first bank of coils. A thin brush or compressed air blast (with back panel removed and frig rolled out into the room) can be used to get dust off condenser heat transfer banks behind the first bank. These \'banks\' are arranged in waves under this frig. The face of the first wave is all that a vacuum can reach, which is why a fine brush that can reach between the metal heat transfer rods or compressed air are needed.

My fridge and freezer stopped cooling, what could be the problem?

First check the back wall of the freezer to see if there is frost build up. If it is frosted over, check defrost system for failure

Fridge warm, freezer has frost on back panel & is defrosting, fans work, just changed defrost thermostat, no air is moving from freezer side to fridge side, drain pan under fridge is dry

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

My GE Adora side by side refrig. has stopped making ice and I am having a hard time regulating the settings on it. The freezer is too cold and the refrig. section isn't cold enough. I also have noticed...

Defroster circuit/timer has failed.

The water line to the icemaker has probably frozen,so no ice. The cooling coils are in the freezer, and the cold air moves to the fridge via vents and circulation fan.

When it all ices up, no air gets to fridge, fridge gets warm.

Many models have a mechanical defroster timer located under the lower front kick panel. Manually rotate the timer until you hear the compressor stop.

Defroster heater then should come on and you hear scorch/hiss/gurgle of defrost sounds. If the timer is working, the fridge should come back on after about a half hour or so.

Sometimes timer fails, sometimes heater element fails. There is also a defrost thermostat that's part of the heater assembly.

Unit gets cold when turned on then slowly gets warmer and then does not cool at all

Most probably defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.

Warm

If you need freon you can't do it yourself

Could be caused by the drain hole below freezer coil being blocked by ice. You MUST remove all ice in drain under freezer coil. Use turkey baster to squirt hot water into hole and use hairdryer to defrost. Possible defrost thermostat is defective. Unit never goes into defrost, ice forms on coil and in floor of freezer. After defrosting may work OK for a week or two but gradually gets warmer because ice is blocking ports where cool air gets to refrig. May also have water in refrig box. Can also be caused by defective defrost timer.
