Question about GE Refrigerators

2 Answers

GE refrigerator Model No. GBS22KBSAWW A relay on the control board was clicking and the evaporator fan would try to start with each click. With the evaporator fan disconected the compressor runs, etc. I replaced the evaporator fan motor, and before I installed it, I pluged it in and the motor turned, but when I put the fan blade on, it would not turn, like the old one. Also, the condensor fan does not turn, but does not make the control board click.

When the evaporator fan motor is running without the fan blade attached, the compressor runs without a problem. The clicking of the control board only happens when the evaporator fan motor is connected to the system AND the fan blade is in place. Also the condensor fan motor does NOT run at any time, but does not cause the contol board to click. This clicking of the control board happens about once every second.

I have replaced the control board AND the evaporator fan, and all is running smothly. I didn't check the resistance of the fan motor, since I had replaced that before asking this question. Your 2nd comment was much more clear and on target. Thanks!! Ray

This normally could be a bad start relay and over load for the compressor, dirty condenser coils need cleaning, condenser fan motor is not running or the compressor itself. The Relay needs to be replaced and checked. But if the problem is same then the control board is causing this problem. You can get required parts from www.repairclinic.com

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

    Its a control board fault.

Because the fan is controlled by the controlled board.
The control board regulates the fan speed, and the noise is caused by the board setting the fan speed (incorrectly) to just the right pitch.
the main control board is faulty which could cause the fan to run at the wrong speed and generate the annoying clicking noise.

This problem is faced by many others too.The control board gets faulty causing this clicking noise.

Thanks for keeping updated with your query.

If it turns without the fan blade but not with the fan blade, the motor is likely weak and will need to be replaced. You can test it with an ohmmeter on each wire connection and see if you get a good strong reading or a low bad one.

If the compressor runs without the fan and fan doesn't run while plugged in, then I would test the fan like I had stated earlier. You can test the resistance with an ohmmeter on the Rx1 setting.

Try spinning the evaporator fan motor with your fingers. If the freezer door was left closd it may have rusted on its shaft and be stuck. We need to test the voltage going to fan if oiling its bearing and spinning byhand does not get it moving. Click Here for a service manual=> HERE and here=> GE Artica Test Sheet The fan motor or a relay on the motherboad may also be defective. You should get 12-13 volts DC at the fan motor, Thanks Sea Breeze

Hi!
A relay starts the compressor with a higher voltage and then quickly kicks out
It does a lot of clicking (trying to start over and over again)
If thats what is happening with yours
Its best for a tech to replace The relay but you can do it
Take your model number to your Local Appliance parts store they will have a diagram
showing you how to install the relay. Its called a hard start relay
I use part no ERP410 POWER START RELAY, CAPACITOR AND OVERLOAD all in one. (110 v)

Something has malfunctioned on *********** control board part number WR55X10942 This board controls most functions of the refrigerator. It would be simple to say change the board but this is the first time I have seen one affect so many different controls that I recommend that a service technician come out and make sure that something other that that board is not affecting the other controls on your refrigerator. Please let me know what the technician finds, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Refrigerator has a clicking sound and does not run

Replace the motherboard (part # WR55X10942) but be careful to check that the evaporator fan (inside the freezer) turns on when you power up the refrig again. A bad evaporator fan motor can take out the motherboard. If compressor starts with new board but not evap fan, unplug immeadiatelly and replace the evap fan motor to save new board.

Main control board bad . The board controls the fan opperation and the clicking , sounds like a relay on the board . Replacing the board should solve the problem(s) .

GE MODEL GSH25JSRF-SS PROBLEM HELP PLEASE

I had the same problem back in March. First the water and ice dispensers stopped working, then the clicking started and the compressor wouldn't turn on. I replaced the circuit board and everything started working again, until today. This is a very common problem with the circuit board on these refrigerators. Do a search for "GE circuit board" and you'll see what I mean. GE issued a service bulletin to its technicians that this service should be provided free of charge, and anyone who already paid to have the circuit board replaced will be reimbursed. I wish I would've known about it 6 months ago. I will be calling GE Consumer Affairs on Monday to get this resolved.
