Question about Brother HE-120 Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Model HE-120 was sewing 2 pieces of naugahyde w/ heavy duty leather needle when needle started to ****-got "The safety device has been activated." error message. No tangled threads found. Balance wheel will move 1/4 turn either way. Both belts ok. Any ideas as to why it won't sew anymore?

I have singer touch tronic 2001. I was wondering if a HD needle size 18 work on this sewing machine

Yes, you can use a size 18 needle in the TouchTronic 2001. See page 15 (page 21 of the PDF) of the manual. The PDF is available here: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/66946ce4f503e17bfd20036aef30c05707c736e1.pdf .

You should only use a heavy duty machine needle (2020-18 or 2032-18) with a heavy cotton mercanized or synthetic thread when those are appropriate for your fabric. You should always match the thread to the needle. The thread should fit in the groove on the front of the needle. If the thread is too thick or thin compared to that groove, you can have problems with tension.

I hope this helps.

check the needle holder if its tight enough not to fall out. now if your needle gets stuck, try using another needle appropriate for your material. if your problem persists, the problem might be on how do you attach your needle. try attaching in reverse side.

The safety device has been activated

Turn the machine off. Check for a broken or bent needle or a bird's nest in the bobbin area. Sometimes when I try to put an extra heavy piece through the machine I' ll get that message. The most common reason for the error is a broken or bent needle.

Sounds like it is still not feeding smoothly, Try putting some clear tape on the bottom of the foot and tissue paper under the leather. Leather is tricky sometimes.

Probably a little heavy duty for a domestic machine - most don't like thread through the bobbin tension device any heavier than 50 grade.

Some tension devices have a hole that you can use to bypass the tension spring (Elna is one) which allows thread like perle cotton to be used in the bobbin. But you still can't put it through the needle (just on the underside for decorative sewing effects) .

In the past I've needed to sew vinyl tractor seats where I was stitching the vinyl to a 1/4" thick foam and after trying everything (roller foot, leather needle) on the domestic machine, I bought a Singer 20U industrial machine with 1 1/2 hp motor in a table in order to seam this weight of textile. Different system needle used and the bobbin could handle heavier weight thread.

Probably not the response you wanted though.

WHAT NEEDLES FOR SEWING LEATHER ON A LS 1217

The WEDGE POINT NEEDLE, which is designed for leather and vinyl, easily pierces these fabrics to make a hole that will close back upon itself. This eliminates unattractive holes in the garment, and also reduces the risk of the stitches tearing the fabric. The wedge point needle comes in sizes 11 to 18. The size 11 needle is designed for soft pliable leathers, while size 18 is designed for heavy or multiple layers of leather or vinyl.
