Question about Homelite Expand-It Hedge Trimmer Attachment

1 Answer

My hedge trimmer Mod# HT-19 blade stopped working with the back and forth action. It appears that the bottom plate rusted and wore through. Is this a fixable problem that I can do myself? Do they have a parts manual and breakdown to show me how?

B&D Hedge Trimmer (HT33) was working yesterday but not today. Motor sounds fine & the blades move back & forth ... just not cutting any foliage ... any ideas?

Mechanical issue. Make sure that the screw that holds the moving blades up against the non moving blade is adjusted properly. If loose, the blades will not be close together during the cutting stroke and no cutting will ensue.

I have Bosch hedge trimmer AH15 63-16C which has stopped cutting. It still seems to be working as it should and the cutters moving as normal but suddenly stopped cutting? Just wondering if this is fixable...

This sounds similar to a problem I have with my Bosch AHS 60 24s. The blades are moving but not independantly and therefore not in a cutting action. I took it apart and the bottom blade has slipped off the drive wheel. I put it all back as it should be but as soon as I used it again, the same thing happened. I'm not sure why this is happening, it may be that the motor end of the bottom blade has become slightly bent, so I will be trying to straighten at the weekend. The cost of replacement blades is prohibitive and time for a new hedge trimmer. Has anyone else had this problem and a different solution.

Stihl HS45 hedge trimmer runs fine, blades move well, does not appear to cut hedge - what could be the problem ?

Dull blades! Lol, or they're not meeting eachother on each reciprocating stroke so there is no shearing action, much like a pair of scissors. Check to see if the blade bolts are too loose or is the blades are warped or if the cutting edges are simply too dull

It starts just fine, but when I give it the gas the blades don't move. Something has gotten disconnected or needs repaired to make the blades move back and forth again.

The problem is with the centrafugal clutch - the clutch plates are not engaging- it is a sprung mechanism - Remove all dirt from the centre of the clutch and check to make sure the clutch plates are moving - do this with a flat screwdriver. Good luck!

The engine starts up and runs perfectly but the blades are not molving.

Check the gearbox for lubrication, if it hasn't gotten any grase for a long time the bearings may have failed.
If you feel adventurous remove the bottom cover and look, there should be a bearing at the motor output, and at the blade connection, the bar that connects the two and makes that back and forth action should be connected to both ends.

Describe your Black & Decker Hedge Hog

You may have a piece of metal between the moving blade and the stationary one. Also the motor may have been at the top of the stroke when it stopped. You may be able to "force" the blade to move a little. This may free it enough to work.

You're going to take off like 20 screws including the ones that hold the handle and the hood at the base of the blade. You open it like a clamshell. There is a black plastic cover at the very bottom that covers the gear wheels (one tiny wheel that comes from the motor and a large wheel that actually moves both blades back and forth). The black plastic cover is no attached with screws. You just remove it so you can get to the gears. Now you oil and manipulate the large gear wheel until it comes loose and you can see the blades move back and forth. Put the whole thing back together and you are ready to go!

Blade length problem

Hedge trimmers cut using either a single-action, where only the top blade oscillates, cutting against the stationary lower blade, or a double-action where a pair of double-sided toothed blades that slide back and forth at a high speed so you can sweep across hedges in both directions. The latter are more efficient. Blade length Consider the size of the hedge you will be cutting to get the right length blade. The longer the blade length, the more area it can cover and the quicker it will get the job done. However longer blades also require more power and larger heavier motors so weigh up blade size versus ease of use. Blade lengths range from 14 to 30 inches with long blades of 22 to 30 inches providing extended reach for taller or wider hedges. Blade width The blade width indicates the space between teeth and the maximum thickness the trimmer can cut through, eg. 20mm blade width will be able to cut through a maximum 20mm branch.
