No it isn't the refrigerant but it is the oil that is mixed with it and it means that you have a leak in the system...

There is a thick sticky black substance leaking from my refrigerator for the past two weeks on the left front side. Frigidaire model p/n 241543966

Hello Melanie;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.

You do not have a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is clear in color.

You have a water leak. The black sticky substance is either coming from your bottom condenser cooling coil or just general dirt under your refrigerator that accumulates over time. The coil under your refrigerator collects dirt as well.

You need to pull the refrigerator out so you can get behind it.
Unscrew the bottom back cover. Inspect for the water leak source. Your condensate drain pan may be leaking or dislodged.

The water line to your ice maker may be leaking.

Your water supply shut off valve to your refrigerator may be leaking.

Oil in water

Sometimes that is a sign of a sealed system leak. If that is the case unit will start having cooling issues. Most of the time repairs cost more then replacements.

Liquid leaked out know fridge isnt working. model dcb412bls

When you say liquid, are you meaning an oily substance or water. Since it isn't working, I have to assume oily substance which could mean either the cap or freon. If it is the capactor that has blown up then it is worth changing (change the contactor at the same time). If it is the compressor leaking freon, then it is usally not cost effective to change out and recharge the system and would take a professional to do.

My kenmore window unit AC started blowing a white smoke like substance. It seems to be cooling fine. What is this and is it a concern?

The two things it could be, #1 - evaporator leaking refrigerant - unlikely if unit is still cooling o.k. because window units do not hold a lot of refrigerant and if there is a leak bad enough to blow smoke it would have stopped cooling by now. #2 - the humidity is high and the unit has cooled the air right at the discharge down below the dewpoint, a common occurence in window units and automobiles due to the short duct distance from the evaporator to the air outlet whereas with central air systems having longer duct systems the air gains more heat before being discharged into the room.

Dometic refrig not cooling but found yellow oil at service panel

if you find an oily substance its most likely freon. this looks pretty new so i would say you have a bad soldered joint on a copper to steel line. theses usually ar fot the high side. where the condensor coil or loop runs either to underref or up in the ref walls

Odor emitting fro refrigerator

I wish i did know what exactly the problem could be from. One possible cause of this oily looking substance is that you have a compressor line leak somewhere within the walls of your side by side. you may want to look into your warranty to see if this an be covered if under warranty. there is a product however that is a charcoal based air purifier for fridges it is called fridge aid. and can be purchased at a cheap cost.hope this helps
