Question about Vinotheque Whisperkool 8000 Wine Cooling Unit (Max Room Size = 2000 cu ft)

Open Question

New Whisperkool XLT 8000 is very loud, much louder than the same model XL when it was installed 6 years ago. The installation was the same in the same spot, but I can hear the unit running throughout the house, which was not the case with the last one.

SOURCE: Whisperkool 4200 icing up

Hi, Bob:

Misery loves company, so I'm posting this even if it isn't in time to help you.

I had an XLT 8000 with similar problems. Vinotheque wanted to do the exchange program ($2,500+), and I was told the older aluminum coils might have leaked, and the exchange models come w/ SS coils. I was near to biting on that, when I decided to have a local refrigeration shop check it out.

Here's what they found--A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. It seems there are small copper capillary tubes that circulate the refrigerant. If they touch each other, with normal operating vibration they can wear holes in each other and the refrigerant can leak out. The leak can be very slow. According to the guy who fixed it (all for $219, and much of that was for drilling out the riveted-closed enclosure), "crossed cap tubes" is a Bush League mistake, akin to not putting oil in your car's crankcase.

I'm not saying WhisperKOOL/Vinotheque did this on purpose, knowing there would be an eventual failure and an opportunity to make another sale. But what the service guy told me was that IF the manufacturer was without scruples, a crossed cap tube would be the perfect way to take advantage of an unsuspecting customer.

My fix? Drill out the rivets, and find a local qualified service tech. Fixed in hours for $219 or in weeks with an exchange for $2,500... You choose.

SOURCE: my wine cooler is making a loud humming noise. It still cools fine, but you can hear it throughout the house now.

possibly the compressor is running harder due to either being low on freon or the condensor coils are dirty not letting the heat to be released causing the the compressor itself to overheat.

I would like my vtx 1300 to be a little louder. can i drill a small hole in the back of the muffler to make it louder will this work any pros or cons please

Honda mufflers typically have several baffle walls You may need a drill 14 or more inches in length to punch through enough of these walls to make a noticeable difference. Changing the back pressure of the exhaust will also lean the mixture. This may cause a bad hesitation on take off. This will happen if you change the exhaust system also. To correct the hesitation you may need to install a jet kit on a carburetor model (about $100) or install a Power Commander on a fuel injected model (about $400 plus programming). In both cases your fuel economy will go down. Your stock system has a five year warranty, should not blue like an aftermarket pipe (unless you leave the choke on too long), and have a good long service life. Unfortunately there is no easy solution for your problem. Any aftermarket system will be way to loud (especially on the freeway) and drilling may not give you the desired sound you are looking for leaving you angry and frustrated. Consider a different option, One of the best sound options I have heard was a set of stock Harley pipes adapted to a Yamaha Virago 1100. Most Harley riders change out there exhaust systems before they even ride there bikes which should offer a cheap high quality system that can be adapted to your stock headers with common automotive adapter pipes and custom build it yourself supports (a simple modification of your stock pipe support/mounts). By not damaging your stock system you can always put it back on if you do not get the desired effect.

Furnace sounds louder and feels stronger heat coming through???

The service technician probably installed a larger motor pulley which increases the fan speed to blow more air which results in a slight increase in duct noise which is normal.
