Question about Olympus WS-100 Digital Voice Recorder

1 Answer

I have an Olympus Voice Recorder WS-100. It was working fine, and then suddenly it just stopped working - it just wouldn't come on. I've checked that the battery is good, replaced with a new battery, checked that the hold button is off, made sure that the switch is fully on, etc. Do you have any ideas? Is there a way to reset it? or does this mean it's just finished?

Well it sounds as if the flash memory on the unit has gone bad. But lets see if it we cant fix it first.

  1. first plug the unit into your computer as you would regularly do.
  2. Now navigate to my computer.
  3. once in my computer right click on the device and hit properties.
  4. Once inside properties make sure the device is displaying the correct amount of space.
  5. If it says something like 50mb's or less than 900mb's the flash memory is damaged.
ok after you have confirmed that all the memory is there. Download the software check flash by clicking here
  1. To commence testing, run check flash. Select the voice recorder drive (this will be the same as the one you checked in properties) concerned in the ‘Drive’ combination ?eld. Retain the ‘Use temporary ?le’ as the ‘Access type’ settings. Only the ‘Write and read test’ action is available for this type.
2. Also leave the ‘Small pattern set’ option as it is. Thus con?guring, a complete test cycle consists of two test runs with different data. This is sufficient for a ?ash device.
3. If you want to do a thorough check, select ‘Full pattern set’. The tool then conducts 18 test runs for every single bit to check its functioning but this takes quite some time. To start the same, click ‘Start’ and wait for the analysis to complete.
Now after check flash has ran it will either tell you if there were errors or if the device checked out and is perfectly fine. If it is fine then you can try to reformat the device.
Before attempting a reformat you need to make sure there are no system files that will be deleted to do that you need to enable show hidden files or folders. to do that follow the steps in this video
once you are able to see hidden folders open the voice recorder and make sure there is not a hidden folder with a pmp_usb.ini file or anything like that they generally have a faded icon to let you know if its a hidden folder. There is also a trash folder on the device generally make sure that the trash folder is not filled all the way, as this could cause the problems. you can attempt to format the device. Make sure before you format the voice recorder click on properties again and see if the device is fat32 or ntfs. below are the steps to format the device But first check that garbage/trash folder on the device. to format steps are below.

Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives.
  • 2 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive.
  • 3 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'.
  • 4 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place.
  • 5 Once the process is completed, Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine now.

  • now if it you have done all this and you formatted the device giving it a fresh start and check flash verified that there is no damage to the flash memory. You can try the device to see if it will record. If you need any explanation on the steps above or require further assistance please let me know and i can assist you further. Thanks-Midwest-tek

Here is the link to the Olympus website where you can download the manual. In it there are steps to format the device which should clear all of the data and you should be able to start recording on it again.

CANNOT TRANSFER AUDIO FILES FROM WS-100 OLYMPUS VOICE RECORDER TO PC (Windows XP)

I wrote this for the Olympus VN-3100PC although it may work with this device as well.

    Try this:

This problem can typically be solved by unplugging the device from your computer's USB port and plugging it in to another USB port on the same computer.

Also be sure you have Olympus Digital Wave Player installed and open with your Transfer Options set to Auto Transfer. To do this, follow the steps below:

Open Digital Wave Player > select Transfer from the menu > select Transfer Options > under Auto Transfer, check the box which reads "Transfer all audio files after detecting Recorder."

Refer to your Owner's manual to re-format your recorder. Sometimes, recorder memory can become corrupted just as with any electronic memory media.
