Question about Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501/R Notebook

1 Answer

I was given a qosmio G15-AV501, but it appears to be overheating about 10 minutes of operation. It will run for a little while, then just shuts down. Between 5 and 15 seconds before it turns itself off I hear an internal fan come on. Then it shuts down. If I try it again a 2nd time it doesn't run as long before the shutdown occurs. After this happens it warm in the center of the bottom of the laptop but does not seem excessively hot. Any suggestions? Apparently this was sent back to the factory once before for overheating problems and I have the receipt for $450 of parts and labor. Not worth that to me, but if there are any simple suggestions I'm interested. Anyone know if this was a common problem? I see no posts about it.

Thanks, interesting. I'm normally a desktop type, but it was free and seems nice when its running. So worth pursuing.

I find very little documentation on line on this this, almost as though Toshiba doesn't want lay people to attempt repairs :-(. Do I get to the bios options you mention via setup?
What is an appropriate temperature range?

If I hear the fan come on, isn't it working? What I believe I heard is air flow, not just a motor,
but I will try to open it and look. Have yet to find anything that tells me how to even open the case to see the mother board. Its been trial and error so far.

No particular problem with your unit. In your case it appears that the fan isn't operational - open the laptop and replace it.
Also check in the BIOS the shutdown temperatures, they might be set way too low.

Thanks for the reply an encouragement, but from the sounds it makes the fain does come on,
what I think I hear is air movement, not just a motor. However Toshiba doesn't seem to show
much info on who to open it or do repair, ie they seem to want one to pay for it. I have yet to find anything about how to open case, all has been trial and error so far. Any suggestions on disassembly info?

You also suggest checking the temperature range in bios. I'm not near it now, but do I get to that through the F2 setup option at boot? Doesn't run long enough to do anything else. If so, what temperature range should it be set to?

    Regards, Will

To open your laptop use this site  the G20 is very close on G15 so the instructions will be pretty much the same.

To enter in the BIOS you must press Escape while the laptop starts. In there should be something like "PC Health Status" or "PC Monitoring" - in it you will find the temperature settings - make sure they are set at 80 C .

Toshiba Qosmio G15-AV501 will not boot

Subscriber/user FMFM85 had posted a solution for another laptop that worked for me. That was Power down, remove battery, remove power, wait five minutes, plug in power and do not install battery, I rebooted to last known good configuration. This method got me further along.from the absolute DEAD state the laptop was in. Now I know that the laptop is really hosed in other ways. I will keep you posted.

have you tried pulling each stick of ram individually?
if there is still no boot then its safe to say that the motherboard or one of the two video cards has failed. its a pretty common on the qosmio g series

New hard drive for my Toshiba Qosmio G15 R laptop

I believe with Toshiba they normally would give you a recovery disk and then a drivers and utilities disk as well. If you don't have both then I would suggest installing windows xp and then go to this page: on the downloads button and from there choose your operating system and you can download the drivers from that page. You'll know which drivers you'll need by going into the device manager and seeing what has a yellow question mark next to it.If you need more help with this let me know and I'll help you more.

I had the same problem, what you need to do is call Pamela Saunders at Toshiba Corporate in Irving, CA and she will get it repaired for you at no cost to you regardless of warranty. This is a bad batch of computers.

The Phone Number is: 800-457-7777 or 949-462-6000

Help with Toshiba G15-AV501 Qosmio bluetooth!!

The solution to your second problem is to insert the CD Qosmio Player Recovery CD. The buttons on the top do actually work (most of the time) yet it seems for some reason qccasionally it takes the CD refresh to get them working again. The picture and sound are great once you have got them working. So, don't be discouraged it's a great PC (once you have resolved your problems) I have had mine for 3 years w/o problems except for this one just described. Good luck.

One other thing I did have trouble with the Bluetooth, I resolved it by buying a Targus Bluetooth dongle, (disaabling all built in Bluetooth) then everything "paired" and worked easily, (unlike the built-in)
