Not posting the model number of the Dell desktop computer, get's you generic information.

The model number can be found on the back of the computer, next to the Windows product key.

Moving on......


Suggest use an external enclosure.
Remove the harddrive from the computer, and install it in an external enclosure.

The external enclosure has a USB cable, and you just plug it into any available USB port, on a working computer.

Then go to My Computer, or Computer; depending on which Windows operating system the computer has; and double-click on the drive letter that corresponds with the external enclosure.

(WinXP: Start > My Computer
Win Visa / Win 7: Windows logo button > Computer )

Examples of drive letters;

C: Drive = Harddrive of the computer you are using

D: Drive = Separate partition on the harddrive for Restore files, or is for the optical drive (CD/DVD drive)

E: Drive = Optical drive generally, but may be the drive letter that corresponds to a Removable Device.
The external enclosure you plugged in, is a removable device.

None of the above is 'etched in stone', except the C:Drive
Things change from computer to computer, and the way you may have it set up.

Easy way to know?
Before plugging in external enclosure, open My Computer, or Computer.
Look at what each drive letter corresponds to.

Now when you plug the external enclosure in, you will see the change; and know which drive letter corresponds to the external enclosure you just plugged in.

Double-click on the name next to the drive letter, that corresponds to the external enclosure you plugged in.

Go into My Documents, or Documents.
Again, depends on which version of Windows you have.
Win XP = Start > My Documents
Win Vista / Win 7 = Windows logo button > Documents

Now open each folder, until you get the personal files you want to keep.
Photos, music, videos, documents you have created, or downloaded.

You cannot remove programs, or applications. Just your personal stuff.
(You can, but that is for a separate discussion)

Also open Downloads.
(WinXP = Click on Start > My Documents > DOUBLE-click on Downloads.

Win Vista / Win 7 = Click on the Windows logo button (Start), click on Documents, click on Downloads.

Harddrives are measured in Width.
2-1/2 inches across for a laptop harddrive. 2.5 inches.
3.5 inches for a desktop harddrive.

Don't know what Dell this is again, don't have the model number.

Cannot tell you if the harddrive is an IDE (PATA) unit, or a SATA unit.

So you will need either a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,
OR,
a 3.5 SATA external enclosure.

There are external enclosures that are 3.5 and IDE/SATA, also.

Inside that plastic external case of the Hitachi XL 1000 external harddrive, is a regular desktop computer sized harddrive.

It is a SATA type of harddrive.
It is 3.5 inches across in Width. (3 and a half inches)
1 TB in size.

On the back end of the Harddrive is where it's power cable, and data cable are attached.

Inside the case of the Hitachi also is a small circuit board. (PCB or Printed Circuit Board)
The SATA harddrive is connected to this small circuit board.

The small circuit board, or Interface PCB , is attached directly to the Harddrive.
Or cables (Wires) are used to connect it to the Harddrive.
The Interface PCB is connected to the computer, via the USB cable that is attached to the Interface PCB.

It is this small circuit board that usually goes bad.
(Unless the external harddrive was on, and dropped. Then the problem is the Harddrive)

There are two solutions;

One, buy an 3.5 SATA external enclosure, and use the Harddrive as an external harddrive again.

Two, install it as a Slave drive in a desktop computer, and retrieve all your information. Burn to disk/s, or flashdrive/s.

When using a SATA harddrive as a Slave drive, there are NO jumper pins to mess with.
DO NOT change any jumpers on the back of a SATA harddrive.
(These are for the factory)

There are no guides to open a Hitachi XL 1000's case, to my knowledge.
It isn't something the manufacturer wants stated.

However opening the external enclosure (Case) isn't that tough. It falls under the same as this model,

Here we see at 3:00 through 5:00, that the Harddrive is attached directly to the Interface PCB.
Just remove the Harddrive from the chassis, and unplug it from the Interface PCB.

I need a new internal power supply for my 2tb external its an Iomega prestige. I just want the part number for it so i can order a new one.


There is no internal power supply. The unit gets it's power from the computer. A USB port has 5 Volts DC.

Inside that external enclosure of the IOmega external harddrive is just an ordinary harddrive as used in a desktop computer. A SATA harddrive.

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board with an interface on it, or there are cables, (wires), which come from the circuit board, and plug into the back of the harddrive.

It is this small circuit board that is usually the problem.
The solution to this problem is to simply just buy an economical external enclosure, and install the harddrive out of the IOmega into it.

Just one example from a quick search for an economical SATA 3.5 external enclosure,

A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. 2 and 1/2 inches.
A desktop harddrive is 3.5),

I have several computers at home, and none og them can recognize this portable device. Hitachi 250 GB Mod: SDM/250RW


1) Power:

It may be the problem that occurs with a lot of USB powered devices jrherrer. Not enough power provided.

The USB cable plugged into the computer, provides signal wires for transferring information back, and forth, and also provides 5 Volts DC for power. (Two D cell flashlight batteries produce 3 Volts DC)

[ Below shows the Signal pins, and the Voltage pins of the USB B Mini style connector, (Male), used to connect to the SimpleDrive Mini external harddrive,

Pin 1 is for the 5 Volts DC Positive (Wire color - Red)
Pin 2 is for the D- Signal (Wire color - White)
Pin 3 is for the D+ Signal (Wire color - Green)
Pin 4 is not connected. (Or sometimes joined to Pin 5 with a Resistor)
Pin 5 is for the Ground (Wire color - Black)

From what I see the SDM/250RW has a USB port on the side, and a DC Power Jack, used for an AC adapter, also.
(Round port with a pin in the center)

From what I see stated from Hitachi, and sellers on the 'net, the AC adapter may not be provided.
Many of those who provide a review state that both the USB cable, and the AC adapter is needed to provide enough power. Seems to be a power hungry external harddrive

It's a 2.5 Hitachi SATA laptop harddrive inside that external case. (The Harddrive is 2 and a half inches across in Width. Common size used for laptops)

When using an external device powered by a USB cable there are general guidelines to follow,
A) The USB cable should not be more than 2 feet in length
B) Connect the device directly to your computer, instead of through a hub, or other device, unless the USB hub has it's own power.


2) USB cable:

Could be a faulty USB cable, although I imagine you have tried different ones by now.


3) Interface Circuit Board:

The Hitachi SATA 2.5 harddrive inside the SImpleDrive Mini SDM/250RW, plugs into a small circuit board located inside that external case.

Components on the circuit board may be fried, or the Harddrive may have come loose from the interface.

Loose from the interface
To explain;
The back of the harddrive has connector pins sticking out.
The interface has socket holes which the pins insert into.

Faulty circuit board
The external case of the SimpleDrive Mini SDM/250RW can be carefully opened up, and the Hitachi SATA 2.5 harddrive extracted out.

Another inexpensive external case for a 2.5 SATA harddrive can be procured, and the Hitachi harddrive put in it.

I have left my hard drive off for 12 hours as adviced, but on turning it on again the problem is still the same. The drive is trying to boot up over and over again.


My solution will be multipart, and lengthy. So if you're a coffee drinker, I suggest you make yourself a fresh pot

Reasoning? I'm going to explain a little bit about the hardware makeup of an external harddrive, and multiple solutions that in the hopes of one of them, may cure your problem.
I'm trying to arm you with as much information as I can, so you can use deductive reasoning, and take the best approach for You.

General symptoms that affect an external harddrive,

1.Bad USB cable. Although it is unlikely, USB cables can go bad.

2.Power supply.
To solve this problem, you need another power supply just like the one you have, for a test. ( Not exactly laying around. I have a work around for that, which I will detail later)

3.Controller failed.
Inside that external enclosure, (The metal, or plastic box of the external harddrive), is an ordinary harddrive such as used in a desktop, or laptop computer.

Yours has a Desktop size harddrive in it. (They measure 3 and a half inches across in width. 3.5"
Laptop HD's measure 2.5")

Harddrives are IDE, or SATA. All harddrives have been going to SATA for quite some time.
Yours is a SATA harddrive.

Inside the external case is an Interface, connected on a Controller Board.

Harddrives use metal round pins that are built on the harddrive itself. These in turn plug into an Interface, or also can be referred to as a Socket.

With an external harddrive, the harddrive itself may plug right into the Interface, (Socket. The metal pins of the harddrive plug into the Interface socket holes), or the Interface plugs onto the harddrive, and cables lead from it to a small PCB in the external harddrive enclosure. (Case)

The metal pins transfer data (Information) back and forth. (Signal pins)
Power for the harddrive is also transmuted through these pins.
Just like plugging in a lamp to a receptacle.

The Controller Board is a PCB. Printed Circuit Board.
This is connected to the bottom of the harddrive. It controls the mechanism inside the harddrive.

When you arrive at Page 5 you'll see the Controller Board. (Their term is Electronics Board)
The Controller Board can be safely removed from the harddrive, and not ruin the harddrive.

You cannot open a harddrive case itself, where the Platters and Arms reside, Unless you have the proper environment.
('Clean Room'. A 99.9% dust free room that would make NASA jealous! This type of room is where a typical harddrive is assembled)

If you use an ESD wrist s-trap and connect it to a good ground source, plus work on a table, you can safely remove, and replace the Controller Board. (No magnetism Anywhere near! NO speakers!)
An average ESD (Electro Static Discharge) wrist s-trap is about $6.

At the bottom of the photo is the back of the harddrive. All the way to the right are 4 pins. These are not recommended to be used on a SATA harddrive, but are for power to the drive.

All the way to the left, is a connection which has 15 pins for the Power connector, and to the right of it are 7 pins for the Data connector.
(It's in the upside down U shaped opening. There is a rectangular wide opening all the way to the left, then a narrow rectangular opening, then the upside down U shaped opening)

4.Harddrive failure. The mechanism inside the harddrive itself has failed. These are mechanical components, as you can see in the Howstuffworks link. Average lifespan for a harddrive is 5 years. Depends on how much it's used.

Solutions:

A.If the harddrive is still under warranty, you can see if the manufacturer will replace it. HOWEVER, they do not guarantee anything that is stored on it. You will get another harddrive minus your information.

B.You can take it to a Data Recovery Specialist. Average price is $50 per hour on up. Average time is minimum 1 hour, and usually takes 3.
I could be mistaken, do research for your area.

C.
1.You could start with using another USB cable, and see if this is the problem.

No?
2.Then it's on to the power supply. This solution cures 2 possible problems. I didn't mention, that sometimes the small PCB board in the external case also goes bad. Most of the time, according to hits on the internet, this is a major problem with a LaCie external hardrive.

The small Printed Circuit Board inside their external harddrive case, (Enclosure), goes bad.

Solution is to buy an external enclosure for a 3.5" SATA harddrive. Take the harddrive out of the LaCie external enclosure, and install it in this one.

Check computer hardware websites on the internet. (Examples of two are Tigerdirect, and Newegg) Look for Harddrive Enclosure. Then 3.5, then SATA.
Average price for a decent one is $20.

3.If this doesn't cure it it may be the Printed Circuit Board on the bottom of the harddrive. If your data warrants saving, then you may want to buy the SAME style of harddrive, borrow it's PCB, and get your information off of your old harddrive. More cost I grant you, but cheaper than a Recovery Specialist. You aren't buying another LaCie external harddrive, you are buying just the saqme SATA harddrive used inside.

Past this, the harddrive mechanism itself has quit. Only a very competent, reliable, Recovery Specialist can recover your data, if possible.

Sometimes the hard drive will connect and sometimes it won't.


There have been problems plaguing the LaCie external harddrives, for quite some time now.

The issue directly relates to the interface, inside the external enclosure. I don't know if you are acquainted with harddrive designs, or the interface that they plug into. If you are, disregard the following.

Looking at this illustration, note where it points to -> IDE Connector. The illustration isn't very good, but those dots are metal pins.
The connection inside your external harddrive,
that connects to the harddrive itself, is called an Interface. This is a plug that has socket holes, to match those metal pins.

Now we go a little deeper. There are two types of harddrives. One is an IDE harddrive, the other type is a SATA harddrive. Your LaCie
will have a SATA harddrive inside.
Instead of the 40 pins that an IDE harddrive has, the interface for a SATA harddrive has 7.
(It has 15 pins for the power connection)

Now my solution:
Should you wish to save data that is on your LaCie external harddrive right now, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, (SATA), take out the hardrdive thats in your LaCie, and install it in the enclosure.

Since, the dimensions of the, LaCie design by Porsche 160GB external harddrive are:
Height -> 1.4 inches, (About 1-1/2 inches)
Width -> 4.4 inches, (About 4-1/2 inches)
Length -> 7.4 inches, (About 7-1/2 inches),
I'm willing to bet the harddrive inside is a desktop harddrive size. (3.5 inches across in width)
