Have a 1995 Geo Metro 5 speed (3 cylinder engine) that the
belt (only has one) squeals like a pig. Recently replaced
the alternator which went bad. The new alternator then went bad
after 6 months and the shop replaced it (no charge).
The squealing is a chronic problem and I've lost several belts because of
it. Usually after a few miles the squealing stops. I have suspected
a water pump (replaced in 1999) but the shop says no, that there is a
TSB on it that says new brackets are required (?).
Can't find a TSB on this problem at alldata.com. Anyone ever come
across this. Thanks.

i had this same problem and went through many belts! The problem is the groove in the pulleys on the water pump and crank. clean them out with a knife or a sharp point and be sure to do all the grooves in both pulleys

If it consistently squeals when it is started, get a 2 foot piece of fuel line and listen for where exactly where it is coming from. You may need to have someone else start the car while you're under the hood listening with one end of the hose to your ear and moving the other end around until you identify exactly where it's coming from.

100,000 miles on it.Check for pulley misalighnment, this will cause the
problems you are having.prematuer bearing, belt failure, etc.Any extreem load
on the belts such as a bad water pump shaft or siezed generator shaft will
do the same.hope you get it fixes and so long,Norm

that the tension needs to be increased.

put in 6 weeks ago. They have checked the pulley alignment and
said it is OK. the belt has been replaced.
They are not sure why 2 alternators have failed, one lasted 6 months the
other six weeks. I have long suspected a problem with the water pump but
2 different shops say it's OK.
We'll see if it works this time. The belt still squeals when it starts up
but then goes away after <30 seconds. This is only D+2.

squeals like a pig for a 15/20 second, the alignment of the pulley is ok,I
cleaned the pulley with brake cleaner so no more greasy residue,I adjusted
the tension again, (the new belt didn't squeal for about a year) and still
the belt slip on something,I assume the alt, but I have no problem spinning
it by hand, the problem is likely under load right after start.

pulleys(which you did) and then rough them up with sandpaper. Sometimes,
you just have to "rig it". GW

alternator. The car burned two already. I think the belt is squaling
from a hard pulling alternator under a great load. Have your battery
load tested. (is it original to the car?) An alternator continuously
charging against a battery that will not charge up, can overheat and
fail over time.

After a little more than 1 month of service, another new alternator
has given up the battle. The Metro from Hell has vanquished its 3rd
alternator in 3 months.
Will be taking it to a GM dealer after the discount auto shop replaces
the alternator. Hopefully the heavy hitters can properly diagnose the
problem.
Pulleys have been aligned and belts have been replaced but the mystery
continues. stay tuned.
