Question about Whirlpool ED2FHEXN Side by Side Refrigerator

Whirlpool model GD22DQ. Water continues to leak from the water dispenser. Should I replace the water valve or what appears to be a solenoid switch in the door ? Does the model water valve feed the water dispenser and ice maker independently, the ice maker is working fine. What are your thoughts ?? thanks

All you need is to remove the solenoid valve located on the door above despencer.
First you should try to open it and clean it since by 85 % you can use it again since it is kept open by dirt deposit on the solenoid pole rubber head. Try also to tent litle bit the spring to be more strong again.
All these parts it will be very easily recognise if you just open the valve.
Their is a vry small posibility that the valve can not be fixed so you will have to replaced it. Of course if you like what we call clean jop you can replace it from the first place to have 100 % results.
The solenoid valve located on the back outside part of the fridge is a comon valve which as you have mention feed both ice and water despencer it is ok since you have mention that ice maker works fine.
Good luck

Hi.

First I suggest defrosting the unit completely. Sometimes leaks may be caused by blockage due to water frozen in the water lines to dispenser.
If that does not work, then repair is done taking apart the dispenser, finding the leak and replacing the faulty part.

Here you get all diagrams and parts for your appliance.

I was not kidding you. Water freezing inside water lines can cause a leak. That is first step in troubleshooting.

I was waiting for you performing what suggested and getting back to me to keep troubleshooting further, I was not asking for a sarcastic answer.

Regarding your question"Should I replace the water valve or what appears to be a solenoid switch in the door"

You test both using your multimeter set on impedance. You disconnect or cut terminals and read Ohms at switch and at valve terminals. If there is no continuity on either one , replace it. The valve may also be mechanically defective and stuck in close or open position. That is far less common than an open valve solenoid (the one inside the valve).

Naturally before doing all that you need to ensure that there is no leak caused by ice or broken line. Defrost was part of the procedure. Since it takes time the step is suggested before any further troubleshooting.

Lines can also be defrosted using an hairdryer, but some users did not listen raccomandation of keeping the dryer on Cold and damaged the plastic parts. For this reason I suggest full defrost.

    Goodbye

My "Whirlpool Gold" Refrigerator's interior water dispenser was dripping pretty badly. I just replaced the inlet valve and the drip is MUCH slower but it's still there (1 drip every ~10 minutes). Wha

Perhaps some air bubbles were trapped in the water line during the repair. Try running water thru the line for a good amount of time and that may help to relieve the line of any air bubbles.

if the water is stored in a container matrix in the fridge (to cool it down b4 dispensing) it may have frozen up. best give the unit a complete defrost to see if this is occuring, if so the thermistors may be faulty.

Your water control valve is defective and will need to be replaced. Even though you hear the electrical part of the valve turn off the mechanical part of the control valve is stuck open causing water to continue to flow. What is your model number? Water not dispensing, but icemaker is working

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

The 2 most probably suspects are the micro-switch at the dispenser and the inlet water valve in the bottom rear of the unit.

Here is a manual that will help you:
http://adcxns1.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/8527f904cc8ea8cd85256b5800672333/$FILE/4322658A.pdf

See page 23 for accessing the micro-switch

See this link for water function: (Bottom of the page l;ast step)

These solenoids must have continuity across the terminals.
If you have continuity you can try to reverse the 2 power connectors on them and press the water function in the door. Mind you if you get water in the icemaker by pressing the water dispenser actuator the micro-switch is good and the solenoid is bad. Just make sure to re-connect the wiring correctly on the 2 solenoids. Additionally use a rag to remove the excess water from the ice-maker.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

My whirlpool stopped making ice cubes , water dispenser is o.k. and water to ice cube pan (rubber tube) won't stop running (leaking)

You are going to have to check the water solenoid to see if it is operating correctly. The solenoid operates from the AC power through a micro switch on the rotating cam. When the switch operates the solenoid is jerked out and allows water to flow. When the switch opens (timed to fill up the ice tray) spring pressure snaps the solenoid shut blocking the water flow. If the solenoid valve sticks in the open or partially open position, it allows water to leak by.

Water dispenser leaking dispenses ok, but does not always shut off fully resulting in a slow drip. Like a dripping tap might be just a washer?

you have a faulty water valved solenoid. when you actuate the water lever, the solenoid opens, to allow water flow, then closes to stop it. When you continue to get a dripping before or after, its because the solenoid is not closing completely. Only resolution is to replace the water valve.

The water is controlled by a solenoid valve. If it is leaking, the valve will need to be replaced.
