The most obvious cause would be the transmission - one of the ring seals on the shafts is worn out. To replace the seal and a thorough inspection (if one seal has failed the others can't be far behind) - around $400. If all the seals on the transmission must be replaced - around $450.

Engine is smoking on Cub Cadet LE-100 edger. Is it because of old oil, and if so, howdy I empty the old oil?

Sounds like the rings are leaking. Changing oil will help. look on engine crankcase and see if there a screw type plug the bottom of plug should be facing down. Look in yellow pages and find a repair shop and ask them how much to repair. Sometimes it may cheaper to buy new unit

Either the filter has a hole in it or when you installed it, you cross threaded it and it leaks.

Kokler courage 20 on cub cadet was running locked up had plenty of oil but oil ran out bottom of engine

Check the motor mount bolts they are probably loose and vibration and torque cracked the crank case and the oil leaked out of engine while it was running locking engine.
