Hello

OK, this is a overheating problem of the CPU. If the CPU overheats the system will freeze, hence, the problem you are experiencing.

This problem will need to be sorted out before you use your computer again, because, this can cause your CPU itself to be damaged permanently.

HERE is some tips to prevent this from happening in the future.

Now, we will have to solve the problem at hand.

Firstly, you will need to open the case to expose the motherboard and CPU. If you fan looks like the picture below, you will need to clean the unit, so that the CPU gets the sufficient cooling needed. I usually just use compressed air to blow the dust particles clean from the CPU fan and heat sink.

You can also use the compressed air to blow out all the dust in your computer case.

Click HERE to get step by step instructions on how to clean your computer case properly.

If the problem still persists, you will need to replace the thermal paste on the CPU itself, this is a very complicated task, so, if you do not feel comfortable doing this, just take your PC to your nearest repair store, they will be able to do this and the task above for under $50. I would actually suggest that you do this instead of trying to do this yourself.

Please lket me know if you found this helpful. Also, do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Kind regards
Andrea

Hi, this sounds as if one or more of your programs are conflicting or become corrupt; You need to perform a system restore; you have not stated what operating system you are using and the answer depends on this. But you could try inserting your operating system CD into your drive and do the system restore. Or try pressing the ESC or DEL key during initial bootup, you can then boot into safe mode and reset your operating system to a previous date, before your problem started.

I have a Dell PC and I unplugged the mouse and the keyboard temporarily to clean it. When I plugged them both back into the tower and turned on the computer, neither one worked. I tried to restart, shut...

To try to resolve the issue:
1.) Will a different keyboard and mouse work (PS2 is the name of these connections)
If they will, damage to the keyboard and mouse is likely)
2.) Will a usb mouse and keyboard work?
If they do, then the problem is with the controller on the mobo, unlikley but MAY have been casued by static.

If the USB keyboard and mouse do not work, you have some problems with the motherboard

Try switching off and unplugging the computer, remove the coin shaped BIOS battery and plug in the keyboard and mouse, wait 2 minutes or so and put the battery back, replug in and power on, see if the bios detects the keyboard and mouse (you will see the bios screen flash up a message). If the computer does nOT detect the keyboard and mouse it will (or should) flash a message on the screen saying "no PS2 keyboard or mouse detected".

If this fails to detect the mouse and keyboard and you get no message or beeps, then there may be damage to the connector ports.

If you can get a USB keyboard and mouse to work, use them, Effecting a repair to the motherboard will not be a viable option

I have a Dell 8400 with a wired keyboard and wireless mouse. My computer went into Save Mode and my flatscreen monitor says to press any key on the keyboard or move the mouse to restart. When I do this...

try shutting down, remove power cable, remove memory chips, remove battery on motherboard(coin battery). remove grpahics card from slot(if its the kind you can remove). Now wait 10-15 sec then put in the graphics card, the batter, the memory sticks and close the case plug in the power cable and see if this works!

Dell keyboard locked up

Dear Sir,

PLzz folow this step to unlock your keyboard

Step 1 Check to be sure your "Number Lock" or "Function Lock" keys aren't lit. These can lock out certain parts of your keyboard. If either of these is lit, press them to unlock the locked portion of your keyboard. These can be found at the top right on a laptop and between the number pad and main keys on a desktop keyboard.
  • Step 2 Save all open programs using your mouse. Use your mouse to restart your computer. This will only work if your computer isn't frozen. If your mouse doesn't move, press the power button on your Dell until the computer turns off. Press it again to restart. If the issue was lack of memory or a locked program, this will unlock your keyboard. Continue to Step 3 if the keyboard is still locked.
  • Step 3 Shut down your computer using your mouse or power button. Don't restart. Unplug your Dell.
  • Step 4 Remove the battery if you're using a laptop by turning the laptop over and sliding the battery release latch. Slide the battery out and replace after one minute.
For desktops, disconnect the keyboard from the desktop. Reconnect after one or two minutes.
  • Step 5 Reconnect the power adapter or AC cord. Start your computer.
  • Step 6 If your keyboard is still locked on a Dell desktop, disconnect the keyboard. Restart your computer and reconnect the keyboard after the system boots. Allow your operating system to recognize and reinstall the keyboard

  • Thanks For Your Time.

Dell Dimension 8400 - screen goes black or just freezes, no mouse or keyboard input works. Power down and then power back up works fine for about 10 mins then same problem.

Does the computer emit any beeps? If so, how many beeps?
One quick loud BEEP, at start up means that all is loading OK. If you get more than one BEEP sound, than you could have Memory ( RAM ) that is, or has failed. Sometimes, if one of the internal fans has failed or is failing, a computer will start up, and than shut itsself down again. Look for any error messages that may come across the screen. Get on another computer, and search for "computer beep codes". If you have the original manual that came with the computer, sometimes it will list beep codes in it. As it has been pointed out, it could be the hard drive also, check the beep codes, that is a good place to start.

The issue was resolved by uninstalling SP3. I uninstalled SP3 and the USB PCI card and rebooted. When SP2 reinstalled the device it installed the corect driver (5.1.2600.2180) and everything is now functional. Have no idea why the correct driver was not in XP SP3.
