Use polyester thread and make sure that your tension is right for the job you are doing. Read your manual.

Also, make sure that your needle is in the right way, flat side faces the rear of the machine and that you have a fresh right size needle inserted correctly.

When threading machine, thread won't stay in place at step 4, so when I move thread to step 5, thread comes away. Only bought mchine in March.

When threading the upper thread, be sure to always raise the presser foot. This releases the tension disk and allows the thread to seat properly.

How do i stop the cotton breaking ?

could be the cotton is too old ( cotton has an additive in it to stop it unraveling and this additive deteriorates with age and weakens the cotton--makes it rough and so it will not slide easily through the eye )
go up an needle eye size
check that the thread is not jamming rather than between he tension plates
check that you have the needle in correctly ( groove in the needle facing the thread )

Thread keeps breaking

Hai, I think your thread very old or thick. Please putting some drop oil in thread. If your cloth lighter, you use small size needle and new cotton or silk thread.

My Bernina 1090 keeps breeaking the bottom thread. It sews about 10 inches and breaks. I take out the bobbin and rethread and it sews a while but still breaks. I have had it in for service 3 times and...

Assuming your bobbin tension is not too high, make sure the bobbin case is clean on the inside - use a cotton bud to clean it out. Are you using good quality Bernina bobbins - if not you're on a hiding to nothing ! It is possible that the bobbin case is deformed, but most likely your service man has set up the tensions too high ... look for someone else !

Bother sewing machine x L 5020 cotton keeps breaking

are you sure you have it threaded correctly? - My Brother will break the thread when it slips out of the part that threads up and then comes down to the needle.

Cotton breaks on Brother Embroidery Galaxie 2100 machine

Try turning down your top tension setting a bit. If its at 4 or 5, i would turn it down to about 3 ish. Cotton thread is more brittle than polyester and rayon thread.

Hope that helps :)

When i attempt to sew the cotton does not sew it just breaks and

There are only a few adjustments that you can make. Over time the adjustment get so far out that the machine will need to be serviced. These folks are true pro's. They have the specialty tools and patients to fine tune sewing machine's. I have ours serviced about once every two years or so. They go through them with a fine tooth comb. Hope this helps. Good luck.

No zig and cotton keeps breaking

Make sure you have a new sharp needle installed for both problems and sometimes you need a particular kind of needle for the fabric. Also some machines don't deal well with 100% cotton thread. For some reason it gets caught up in the machine somewhere and breaks. Gutterman and Metrosene make excellent although slightly more expensive threads. Coats and Clark thread is good too. They make an all cotton thread but it doesn't come in as many colors. If you have the old spools of cotton thread from Walmart, just use them for topstitching if you need the color. Other wise, use them for hand stitching or throw them away. One more thing that I can think of off hand, one of my machines does not like lining fabric. For some reason the thread breaks if I stitch really fast. If you have to use that thread, you may try sewing slowly. One more thing, when was the last time your machine was serviced? This can make a huge difference if it's been awhile and you use the machine a lot. Good luck. Hope any of this helps.
