The laptop needs to be disassembled & the motherboard taken out. After that, you could easily replace the damaged DC jack. A replacement DC jack could be purchased through e-bay.com by searching with your laptop's model.

Hello what kind of voltage use the power adapater?

The power adaptor has normally two voltages.
One is primary (Input) which is 110V AC in USA. 220V in UK and others. There are now a days Adaptors which accept both 220V and 110V. However the Adaptor pin will differ. It will be Flat pins for 110V and Round pins for 220V.

The other voltage is the Output which is fed to the Equipment and is Equipment specific. It can be 18V to 5.2 Volt DC. It varies equipment to equipment.. If a wrong Adaptor with output Voltage not matching with equipment requirement is selected, it may damage the equipment. Be careful.

Dc jack of labtop getting vey hot

A common weak spot on most laptops is the DC power jack. If someone trips on the wire while you have the power adaptor plugged into your laptop, chances are that the power jack will get damaged.
On most laptops the DC power jack is soldered directly to the motherboard and there are only three or four small pins holding it in place. Unfortunately that makes the power jack quite weak. Any sideways pulling of the DC power cord while attached to the laptop will usually dislodge at least one of these pins, breaking the solder around it. Modern laptops use quite a lot of power, from about 70W to 120W or even more. The bad electrical connection from the dislodged pin will cause sparks and heating that will eventually burn a hole through the motherboard and can even be a fire hazard.

The usual signs of that are:
  • The battery is not charging properly or stays at half charge despite that you have been using the power adaptor.
  • The screen flickers (the brightness is changing) while the power cord is plugged in. This is caused by the laptop switching between DC power (screen is brighter) and battery power (screen is dimmer).
  • The DC plug gets hot after a few minutes of use and may even smell of burning.
  • There are "scratching" sounds coming from the DC jack.
You need to take the unit apart and check/resolder the DC jack on the system board.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

My ibm think pad t40 is not switching on

Hi
Assume you are trying this on battery and mains?
1st thing is to check if the AC power adaptor is giving out any power, which you can do by obtaining a multimeter and setting it to 50 volts DC. Place the positive probe in the centre of the adaptor plug and the negative against the outside of the adaptor plug and see if you get a reading. this will confirm that there is power getting to the laptop

(NOTE: THIS IS TO BE TAKEN FROM THE DC END of the power adaptor NOT from where the kettle lead AC source enters the adaptor.. if in doubt, get someone who is competent with using a meter)

2nd, is to check that the power button is not sticking and that the small plastic pin between the laptop body and the screen ( I think these have one) is not stuck, preventing it booting

3rd, If you are getting power by AC to the laptop, check the condition of the DC jack socket, if it is loose, appears to spark whrn the jack is plugged in or crackles, this will need replacing

4th, If the above do not work, it is possible that the main fuse in the laptop has gone...specialist repairers job.
