No, Garmin will not provide map updates for free. You can update the unit's firmware for free from Garmin's website, but if you need new maps you must purchase them and download them into the unit. It should not be necessary to do this right away, though. Even if the unit does not have 2008 maps on it, unless there are major changes to the areas you travel most, it should get you around fine until you do decide to purchase updates.

well, I had a similar problem once, I managed to get the unit to relaod the map data using my repair dvd but I cannot guarantee this will work in your case. if your unit still has the basic operating system intact, you shoudl be able to boot it with the firmware update in the SD card and it will load, however, someone else told me they were not able to do this becasue the unit would never try to boot from the SD card. it was basically a brick.
One solution is to visit C&C wireless and pay over $100 for a map update or even send them your unit for even more $. see http://www.finedrive-acc.com/shop.cart?action=ITEM&prod_id=F400-08CP
The other solution was to send it to Fine Digital but they closed their doors in the US so they no longer support us customers. Because of this I made a DVD with map data I purchased from them before they closed and I added much better instructions; this DVD updates the firmware in the unit and loads the last map data issued to the SD card. you would need a PC with a DVD drive and SD card reader to use it. you can find these DVDs on ebay for $18 which basically covers my costs only.

I also had problems with a refurbished Magellan 4250. The paperwork inside said to install the 4.85 firmware update which I found would not work with Windows XP Home at least for me. I used my laptop which has Vista Ult 32 bit it updated with no problem that is so far the only solution I used.
