Question about Audio Players & Recorders
PROTECT means the receiver is automatically powering down to protect it's amplifiers. Top reasons are overheating, which can be caused by poor ventilation, covering vent holes, excessive volumes for long periods of time, or it's actually just that hot in the room, which, with the current weather, I've encountered in clients homes before. The other option, and just as common if not more so, is that the speaker wire outputs are shorted out and are causing the amp to turn off. The easiest way to test this is unplug all of the speakers and turn it back on. If it still says protect, then it's either too hot or there is a physical problem with the protection circuit and needs to be serviced (this would be a good time to kick yourself for buying a sony receiver). If it DOES power on, plug in the speakers one by one, and if the amp goes into protect mode as soon as you plug in a speaker, it's an issue with that one. Check for short circuits in the line (kinks, frayed ends, staples going clear through the wire, etc). If the wire looks good, try putting a different speaker at the end. If a different speaker works, then the speaker is blown, which gives 0 continuity, and the receiver is correctly protecting itself from the high impedance load. Change the speaker.
