Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi there, I have a Whirlpool domestic fridge (Model WRN28RWG6) that has stopped working. It had a new heater element installed several months ago, worked at the time but has not worked again since. When I plug the fridge in and turn it on nothing occurs - totally dead. I can not seem to find a blown fuse or anything and am requiring assistance to help solve the problem please. Any suggestions on where to start and what to look for would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, David Skinner :)

Hi Azraelsrl, thankyou for your support. The power cord looks fine but how do I check to see that it is working properly/not shorting, etc, please? Also, Iam not sure what the thermostat will look like and where it would be located on the fridge? I understand about jumping across the thermostat so I will try that but at this stage it is totally dead - no even a light is coming on, etc. Thankyou for your help! Dave.

Hi again, not sure if my previous reply went through but thankyou for your assistance on this. My fridge does not even have a light coming on, let alone the compressor. Could that be in the door switches, etc? The power cable looks fine - no obvious damage like an electrical short, etc. How would I check it anyway please? Also, I understand about jumping across the thermostat but where would I find it and what would it look like please? Could it be down near the compressor at the bottom rear of the fridge or up behind the panel in the back of the freezer? Cheers! Dave :)

There is no fuse in a refrigerator. This is a very basic refrigerator: it's entire electric system is composed of a power cord, a thermostat, a light switch on the door frames, a bulb, a compressor and 2 fans and some wires to connect them.
If even the lights aren't on then check the power cord. If the cord is ok then check it's connections to the door switch and the thermostat.
If you have light but don't have a running compressor then just jump the contacts on the thermostat - if the compressor starts then you need a new thermostat - find it here

No lights means that power doesn't come in. To check why just follow the wire from the cord an check its connector with an ohmmeter.
The second link i gave you shows the exploded view of you fridge with all the parts and their locations - it's a pdf, print it

Hi I have a domestic rm3862 refrigerator and it will not cool on gas or elect we replace the elect board and still don't work it get hot not cold

Evaporation fridges are normally reliable and have the advantage of being silent. There is no compressor but there is a heating element that should cause the gas to circulate. Under normal circumstances the fridge thermostat should switch off the heating element when the interior is cold enough and the subsequent heating cycles will be so short the heat will not disrupt the fridge operation.

If the fridge is not cooling the thermostat will not switch off the heater and eventually it will begin to warm the interior.

It will not cool if there is insufficient refrigerant.
It will not cool if there is no refrigerant gas.
In this case it will be because a leak has allowed it to escape.

It will not cool if the refrigerant has settled away from the heating element. This happens sometimes if the fridge has been unused for a time or transported in a non-upright way.

It sounds odd but years ago we had a large American Electrolux evaporation type fridge that was unused for a while and would not work. We were told to take it outside and to spend an hour tipping it over and over. We did this and when we plugged it in it began to work like a brand new fridge even though at that time it was nearly 30 years old...

It was still working when we gave it away five years later.

I have a Whirlpool Gold top-mount fridge (GR2SH/GR2SHM). It's about 6 years old. About a year ago the freezer started to have ice build up and water would over flow into the fridge. I defrost the...

The defrost cycle is not working. After a predetermined number of hours of compressor running time, a timer actuates the defrost cycle, which stops the compressor and turns on a heating element to melt the ice. Either the timer or heating element is not working. Also, make sure the melted ice water is actually draining and not re-freezing.

Whirlpool Gold refrigerator is not making ice. Just stopped 3 days ago for no apparent reason. Fridge is 6 months old.

as long as the fridge is working properly the only thing that it could be would be the icemaker...the fridge should still be under factory warranty if it's 6 months old so they should cover it

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Freezer works, fridge doesn't cool

Probably excessive ice in the condensor. Likely defrost thermostat or defrost heater problem.

What happens is excessive ice keeps airflow from the refrigerator part of the unit.

Panel between fridge and freezer very hot and no sound at all

Hi: Its just a coincidence you noticed it then. It is usually hot. It's the reverse side of the refrigerant (the hot side.) If you lived in a humid area the fridge would sweat. Water would run down between the doors. I live in a dry climate so no worries. Older fridges used an electric heating element to keep them dry. They also had an energy saver switch to turn it off. As Whirlpool uses the hot side of the refrigerant they don't use additional power to run the heater. Actually the heater is called a mullion heater. Nothing is wrong with your fridge. I'll look over my shoulder for angry retailers. Hope this helps, Jeff.

Top half fridge not cold freezer department fine

I had the same problem; the top fridge compartment was warming up to 14C while the freezer compartment was starting to defrost (frozen stuff was starting to become soft. I took the rear wall off the freezer compartment and found it all iced up. I defrosted it with a blower heater then powered it back up. It all worked fine for a month when the same thing happened. I figured that the defrost cycle wasn't working. I located the defrost timer on the rear right-side of the fridge. I rotated it several times and found that the fridge was turning on and off. I rotated it until the fridge turned off. I waited 5 minutes then stuck my head into the freezer compartment and felt the rear wall at the bottom where he drain is; it felt warm so I guessed the defrost heater element was ok. I ordered a defrost timer and installed it. I haven't had a problem since.
