Yes. We sort of guessed this was the situation but needed confirmation. We appreciate the quick response.

I understand the service pointer, but if the unit is 5 years old is it possible for the wear to weaken or rub the outer wash plate seal down coupled with a little play in the U-joints to cause a little bit of a gap between the outer plate and the tub? Should we consider replacing the seal and grommets or just try changing the settings to see if that solves the complaint? Thanks

Damage, twisting/tangling, and/or stuck clothing can be a result of inappropriate use of cycles for a particular load type. The Heavy Duty and Normal cycles in the Calypso Washer were not designed for washing small loads of clothes. Use Heavy Duty cycle only when cleaning large loads of seven pounds, or more. Use Normal cycle for cleaning loads of three pounds, or more. During these cycles, a large amount of mechanical action is provided by the washer to thoroughly clean the clothing. Because of this intense mechanical action which includes tipping of the wash plate at approximately 35 degrees from level and this undulating action constantly rolls the load over and moving in a circular motion. The tipping of the wash plate makes a space between the wash plate edges and the basket where the clothing can get through and stuck under the wash plate. Using small loads of clothing in either of these cycles can lead to fabric damage, or twisting/tangling complaints.

Highest mechanical action is done by the machine during Heavy Duty, Normal, and Jeans/Darks cycles. Lowest mechanical action on Delicate/Casual, Wool, & Hand-Wash cycles. It is recommended to “dial down” the cycle especially you are using small loads. There should be no loss of cleaning performance, as long as small loads are used.

Yes, it is possible but you have to change the settings then see if it addresses the issue or not.

Kenmore elite calypro CA error code. Plus makes

The CA indicates that an average current limit on the drive motor has been exceeded (see images below). This is an extremely hard problem to diagnose and one that I've seen cause the best service techs to pull their hair out. It can be one of so many different components, and you have to catch conditions just right to have half a chance to discover which one it is.

Try removing some of the clothes; this could be caused by overloading. You could have a mechanical failure in the universal joint, wiring harness, the drive motor, central control, or the motor controller.

Stops in the middle of rinsing...leaves some water at bottom-

Calypso...The pumps fail often. They have redisigned one that theres not as many problems with, but if you still have the original, this is deffinatly the problem. As far as clothes getting stuck, the U-Joints wear out and cause too much play allowing things to get stuck. Total for this repair parts + labor will usually run about 500-600. There was a class action lawsuit for this machine and they no longer make it.

to all that are having a problem with these calypso washers... if you have paid for a repair then you need to check out the lawsuit... calypsosettlement.com and see if it applies to you.
but if you are getting a mark or a residue on your clothes, then look at the inner wash plate gasket, where it meets with the outer stainless steel tub. if there is a gap between the gasket and the tub then thats where the marks are coming from.
it happens alot and thats not covered by the settlement, but its not too bad to replace the inner wash plate. you need to remove the cabinet, then the tub cover and the innerwash plate dome. then 6 screws and the cover will come off.
replacing the inner wash plate will solve the stains and get you a few more years of use until you have to buy a new washer as more items may fail.

Clothes getting sucked under agitator

I was able to find information on another web site with a Whirlpool Calypso repair manual: https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2c1e295a88aaaae885256c5d004632a4/$FILE/8178010.pdf

Check out steps 5 and 6 on page 36:

6. Using two (2) flat bladed screwdrivers, 90°
apart, in the notches provided, separate the
dome from the outer wash plate. (Fig. 3-11)

7. Remove the six (6) 3/8” bolts securing the
outer wash plate to the universal joint.
(Fig. 3-12) Remove the outer wash plate
from the basket.

That gave me enough room to lift the outer wash plate and remove three napkins and a wash rag.

P.S. Take precautions to keep the bolts from dropping under the outer wash plate.

Whirlpool Calypso - Will not start

You ever hear of dog years? Well Calypso follows those same guidelines. So your machine is 35 years old. These are the Edsel's of washing machine fame. I had a Calypso for 6 1/2 years. 3 pumps, numerous circuit boards, drive motors, phone calls and arguements with Whirlpool, along with machine downtime. I finally junked it and bought a Whirlpool Duet 9200 HT (get the made in Germany machine). A world of difference in wash quality. Fresh smelling unballed clean clothes. The Calypso was removed from the market and the subject of a class action lawsuit. Just Google it and start reading. Get comfortable first. There's a lot to read.
