I have a 21 speed mountain bike. it was wrecked, and now my front gear derailer is not locking into position, it always returns to the first gear unless i hold it in gear. any quick fix solutions as i...

The answer is to tighten the shift handle. The resistance to movement is inside the actual shift knob - it may be worn (tightened again and again) until there is no take up. Usually, you can turn the screw that holds the shift handle on, to tighten it. The pivot screw holds a One Way Clutch to assist in selecting gears.

I suggest that you uncrew the shift screw and add a small peice of paper to the "stack" to increase total width. Then you can turn the screw (at the pivot point) to increase friction of the handle.

My gears are slipping. how can i adjust them? the problem seems to be more in the 5th, 6th and 7th gear. this is a schwinn ranger mountain bike 2.6. it actully just started giving me a problem.

Sounds like your cable has stretched a bit and now the tension is off. There is a barrel adjuster where the cable comes into the rear derailleur. Turning this barrel too the right will increase the slack and turning it too the left will take up some slack.

Shift your gears to the middle of the cassette, then try turning the barrel 1/4 turn to the left, shift and see if it shifts into gear, if not shift back and adjust the tension again. Keep repeating till the gears line up.

if this does not work then it's time to take into a bike shop.

The gears will not change at all. It seems like the part that you twist to change gears is seized on both sides. This is causing the bike to ride very slow.

Actually, it's causing you to have no gearing options. If you were Lance Armstrong the bike would move fast ;0) even with a flat tire.

Crimped, corroded shifter cables can prevent accurate shifting. I'm thinking you need a bike mechanic to look at it.

After it's all fixed you might want to view some resources concerning shifting, braking and general riding skills. It's all out there.

My mountain bike has a gear shifting problem.I can't shift to 1st gear. please help

There are 2 screws one which sets the limit of how far out and the other how far in the derailleur can move. This is to stop the chain coming off either side of the casette. If you get a friend to operate the gears while you watch the derailleur you'll see the screw that's blocking it from moving out far enough for first gear. Adjust the screw so it can move out further and it should solve the problem.

This is a matter of adjustment so the shop shoudl be able to fix this for you. Cable will always stretch on a new bike so these issues usually arise after a few rides. A good shop should tell you this when you buy the bike and have you come back for some adjustment at a later date.

My bike has 21 gears the new wheel only has 18 gears w ill the bike work

yes it will. You will have to adjust the gear shift cable so that it doesn't go past the 6th gear on the wheel (as you would've had a 7th gear) otherwise your chain will constantly slip off the wheel and jam up
