A command-line interface is a mechanism for interacting with a computer operating system or software by typing commands to perform specific tasks. This text-only interface contrasts with the use of a mouse pointer with a graphical user interface (GUI) to click on options, or menus on a text user interface (TUI) to select options. This method of instructing a computer to perform a given task is referred to as "entering" a command: the system waits for the user to conclude the submitting of the text command by pressing the "Enter" key (a descendant of the "carriage return" key of a typewriter keyboard). A command-line interpreter then receives, analyses, and executes the requested command.

Computer command line interface discuss

Well, in the very basic sense, some of the default Windows maintenance programs have a few added functions if you run them from the command line. For example, Defragmenter can be made to defragment boot files for optimization or a variety of other specialty commands.

For optimization of the installation process, you can use a command line to repartition a USB drive as NTFS and clone a Windows install disk by giving the partition boot permissions. This is simple in the command line but would require downloading and installing a third party program to set it up in a GUI.

Some solid state drive options, such as TRIM support, are only flaggable in the command line, and TRIM is a protocol very much necessary for the smooth operation of SSDs. Hard drive functioning and indexing can be controlled at the command line level in ways that are more complex than the simple options in the Windows GUI.

Aside from the task scheduler, a variety of small scripts can be devised in the command line to eliminate small time consuming tasks such as file renaming.

Learning to use the command line is a valuable skill for any computer enthusiast.

What is command line interface?

A command line interface is where you enter text commands to a computer to make it do things. If you are on Windows and you hold the Windows key and press R, then type "cmd" (without quotations) in the dialog box there, it will open a command line terminal. Try typing "dir" (no quotations) and pressing enter. This is a simple command that shows the contents of your current directory.

Further reading on command lines:

There are advantages to the command line mostly based around the idea that it gives you a bit more control over what you are doing. Graphical interfaces (GUIs) sacrifice a bit of functionality for the sake of showing you what you are doing visually.

For instance, think of a folder on your computer with a hundred files in it. Say you want to rename all those files to consecutive numbers or by some other schema. In a graphical interface, you would have to click each one and rename it, but with a command line, you can navigate to that folder and tell the computer to run a simple script that renames all of them with a few simple text commands. Renaming a hundred files might take you 20 minutes in a GUI but typing out a few simple commands might take you only 30 seconds.

In non-Windows operating systems, especially UNIX- and Linux-based ones, ability to use the command line is a valuable and almost required skill, because you have access to the deepest workings of your computer.

1-If you are presented with the command line after Linux boots, And after you login and end up at the command line prompt, you Type:
The above command start up the GUI from the command line, and Get you in the Graphic GUI environment of Linux.
2-If you Linux computer start up with the GUI, and you are Taken to the desktop environment, there is a way to access the Linux command line.
From your desktop, you can go trough the startup menu and choose the " TERMINAL", and this will let you access the Command line. You will end you with a windows with the Command prompt from within the desktop.

The Line( command on my Calculator does not erase

If your calculator is drawing lines in response to the Line( command, there is no objective reason why it would fail to obey the same command with a different argument.
To make sure we are talking about the same thing, let me restate the correct syntax for both usages.

Line(X1,Y1,X5,Y5) draws a line joining the points A(X1,Y1) to point E(X5,Y5).
With the foregoing line already drawn, running the command
Line(X3,Y3,X4,Y4,0) will erase the segment of the already drawn line that lies between the points C(X3,Y3) and D(X4,Y4)

  1. To be sure to obtain the intended effect, draw your graph and press [2nd][QUIT] to go to the main calculator screen.
  2. Then you press [2nd][CATALOG] L to jump to the first command that starts with L.
  3. Find the Line( command and press [ENTER].
  4. The command echoes on main screen.
  5. Complete the command by supplying the coordinates of the points, the 5th argument 0 if needed for erasure, and press [ENTER].
  6. The graph is redrawn with the relevant segment missing.

In this exemple it is understood that the points C and D belong to the line drawn. The erasing is effected by the additional argument with value 0. If the points are not on the line, the segment erased may be shorter and may even be of length 0 (no erasure).

If the command still misbehaves, you may have to use the [2nd][DRAW][1:ClrDraw] to clear the drawing and start again.

I trust you will forgive me for all this information that you already know, but I am thinking about other visitors who might not know how to use the command correctly.

Hope it helps.
