Question about Televison & Video

3 Answers

Turned TV on one night and the screen colors (red, blue and green) have separated side-by-side looking like an old 3-D movie and the picture bows concave in the bottom and top center. Sound is fine and TV responds to channel changes and such just a problem with the picture.

It is a VS-60601 Mitsubishi Projection TV.

  • Ken Thornton Sep 08, 2010

I can do it myself but is there a link to go to for seeing the diagram of this unit so I will know what to be looking for?

  • Ken Thornton Sep 08, 2010

I didn't see a Chassis number but these are what I found on the back. Model is VS-60601, Serial is 104094, Part # is 775B091C2 and it was made in Dec.1997. This unit has a panel that you can unscrew from the back that is underneath the back of the TV that protrudes out. If I take the lower speaker screen in the front there is a panel there also. Just let me know from front or back how to get into the unit the best. Also, what is the IC and how to determine if it is bad or whether it is just resistors.

  • Ken Thornton Sep 09, 2010

By the way, the chassis is a VZ4.

  • Ken Thornton Sep 28, 2010

If I supply a picture of the inside electronic configuration of this TV do you think you can point out the Convergence IC? I need to know where to get one also so I can take it to a place and have it fixed.

Looking for an EPROM IC for this model. Where can I find it and what is the part number.

Classic example of faulty convergence circuit. As the bowing of image has started I don't think it can be adjusted via the convergence menu. Replacing the ICs and nearby resistors(faulty ones which may have caused the problem in the first place) should do the trick. If you have the adequate skills required to do it yourself and I will guide you. Otherwise get me your zip code(if you are in the US) and I will get you a list of tv repair techs in your area.

The IC is located is attached to the large heatsinks at the center of your tv. I can spot them for you just in case you have trouble finding them. If you can get me your Chassis number I can show you what the IC number is, what it looks like and where to get it.

    Sai.

The IC is definitely bad. No doubt about that. Opening the set set should not be a problem its just removing the screws. The tough part is sliding out the chassis as its secured by a lot of locks. Will have to deal with them as we go. If you get stuck while removing a lock , get me a pic so that I can help you remove them. THe IC looks like this
    http://www.kpcomponents.ca/images/STK392...
Make sure you note down the IC number before ordering a replacement. Resistors can be tested by using an ohm-meter(multimeter can be set into this mode). Compare the value obtained on the meter with that indicated by the color code.

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Sep 09, 2010

IC number is STK391-020. You will need 3 of them. See if you can find a convergence kit for your model. It will include all the resistors and the three ICs. It might just workout cheaper.. I will keep looking too.

Re: Toshiba 65 in Cinema Series - 12 years old. Color Separation. Green bow at top center of screen, red and blue double images tilting upwards toward sides. Sometimes clears unassisted after set has...

projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Turned on tv and it looked like 3d. Found red horizontal convergence lines extremely bowed. Cannot correct with magic focus either in auto or manual. What is the fix and what is more cost effective ......

TAKE OFF THE FRONT PANEL AND FIND THE FOCAS ELECTRONIC FOCAS CONTROLS. USUALY BETWEEN THE LEFT SPEAKER AND THE FIRST CRT GUN. PAUSE A DVD WHEN THE CREDITS GOING. OR USE A MENU IN YOUR SAT RECEIVER TO LOOK AT. USEING THE GRID IN THE TV SOMTIMES IS NOT ACCURATE. YOU WILL SEE 6 SMALL KNOBS (RED,GREEN,BLUE)FOCUS AND(RED,GREEN,BLUE)SCREEN DRIVE .FOLLOW THESE STEPS 1 TURNDOWN RED AND BLUE SCREENDRIVE 2 FOCUS THE GREEN (YOU SHOULD SEE SCANLINES) 3 TURN DOWN THE GREEN SCREENDRIVE 4 TURN UP THE RED SD UNTILL YOU SEE RETRACE LINES THEN BACK IT OFF TILL THEY ARE GONE. 5 FOCUS RED (UNTILL YOU SEE SCANLINES) 6 TURN RED DOWN AND TURN UP BLUE 7 FOCUS BLUE (BLUE WILL NOT BE AS GOOD AS RED+GREEN NOW YOU ARE IN FOCUS, NOW YOU NEED TO GET SCREENDRIVE BACK THE BEST WAY IS TO, PAUSE A DVD ON A BLACK SCREEN SELECT PLAY MOVIE AND HIT PAUSE RIGHT AFTER . TURN ALL THE LIGHTS OFF IN THE ROOM AND USE A SMALL FLASHLIGHT TO ADJUST SCREENDRIVE SO YOU DONT MOVE FOCAS BY MISTAKE. THE TRICK IS TO END UP WITH A VERY FAINT GRAY SCREEN WITH EACH COLOR UP AS FAR AS YOU CAN WITHOUT SEEING ANY COLOR ON THE TV. WHEN YOU GET THIS TRY PLAYING THE MOVIE. MAKE SURE THE BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST IN THE TV ARE AT A NORMAL LEVEL BEFORE YOU START . COLOR,BRIGHTNESS,AND FOCUS IS NOW SET TO YOUR DVD PLAYER.DO A FINAL CONVERGANCE AND YOU ARE DONE!
IF YOU CAN'T GET A COLOR TO FOCUS YOU MAY HAVE TO DO THIS MANUALY. SOME TV'S YOU CAN LOOSEN THE NUT ON THE CRT LENS AND MANUALY FOCUS IT. (LIKE AN OLD CAMERA). IF YOU GET THIS FAR YOU MIGHT AS WELL CLEAN THE LENS WITH A VINEGER BASED GLASS CLEANER (SPRAY THE RAG NOT THE TV) TAKE A LOOK AT THE MIROR, CLEAN IF NEEDED. IF THE MIRROR IS REAL DIRTY THEN THE SCREEN MUST BE BAD TOO.TAKE THE SCREEN OFF AND CLEAN THE BACK SIDE IF NEEDED. LOOK INTO THE LENS AT THE PICTURE TUBE YOU SHOULD SEE A NICE BRIGHT CLEAN PICTURE IF IT LOOKS CLOUDY YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE LIQUID IN THE CRT GUNS.I DON,T THINK YOU WAN'T TO TRY THIS YOURSELF. TIP(I USE A LITTLE ARMOR ALL WHEN I CLEAN LENES, THIS REPELS DUST LIKE IN YOUR CAR) IF YOU CHANGE YOUR FLUID AND WANT TO KNOW WHERE TO GET NEW FLUID I PUT CLEAR ANTIFREEZE IN MY PIONEER TV 3YEARS AGO AND STILL LOOKS GREAT "NOT KIDING" HOPE ALL THIS YOU. IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE TO DO IT. HAVE IR SERVICE. REPAIRING THIS WILL BE YOUR BEST OPTION>THANKS

Projection sets have two very common problems.

The first common problem is convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

3 screen colors have separated and screen is bowed in the middle.

I take it this is a projection TV. so they use three lensed CRTs red green and blue. you should have a setup screen that projects a grid pattern. red green and blue. there is SOMEWHERE a adjustment that overlaps the three projected grid patterns. Making a WHITE single grid pattern. red green and blue make white light. Pin cushioning is the bowing. you may find a POT to adjust on the back of the set. I have no idea what set you have.
Lastly.. Pin cushioning can also be caused by faulty flyback transformers.
Hope I could help.. new here LOL
Happy Fixing =)

Picture(Color Convergence)

Go to menu look for convergence on menu if it is not on menu then you have a open fuse located next to Flyback Transfomer on deflection board.

Screen lookes like colores separating

This is what is known as convergence. a projection tube ussally has three picture tubes.. red green blue. they all have to align. the concave picture indicates complete loss of convergence or convegence power supply. First question on these sets Do you have the convergence option in the customer menu under setup. if you do not this is a indication of the common "FL231 fuse problem" and inexpensive simple repair. I have wrote and artilcle on this under my tips and trick section. If you do have the option then next does autoconvergence work. in you case i would not think it work. under blue and red manual convergence does the crosshairs move. if not then this is indication of convergence power supply board. if they move at all this may indicate a convergence amplifer problem.

Tv picture shaped like hour glass

The link you posted has been deleted, so I cannot see the picture you posted. If the sides bow in like an hourglass and the red, green and blue colors are still aligned then there is a horizontal width or pincussion problem, but if the sides bow in and the 3 colors have separated and are no longer anywhere near aligned then you have a convergence problem, both of which should be serviced by someone with experience in servicing projection TV's.
