Question about KitchenAid KHHS179LSS Convection / Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Error Code I just replaced the magnetron and the control board because the unit was heating at what seemed to be 50% and the touch screen buttons would not function. The replacement went well but now I am getting an error code F3H and a Y low Fail 215 0. The touch screen lights up but buttons don't work.

I would recheck the control board installtion that you made, as well as verify that you got the correct replacement. Also the board may contain static sensitive componets so you might want to make sure you are grounded when handleing the control panel. Good luck

It runs but no heat

common probelm with microwaves if everything is working on unit with the exception of the heat itself... then it is very possible the magnetron or the thermal fuse to the magnetron has failed... usually yoiu can access this behind the control panel/control board assembly and test with a volt meter ... the magnetron is what does the heating and is common failure based on your description of problem.... if it is magnetron then the cost is sometimes high to have replaced and will have to be weighed into option of replacement.... most magnetrons have a 3-5 year warranty so it may be beneficial to have a servicer look at it if still under warranty and you may only be out labor cost
good luck to you .....

Unit indicates voltage but oven produces no heat

Might have to look for the series fuse to the magnetron, if blown and on replaccement if this blows again the magnetron is faulty and needs a replacement.
If this seems OK , the high voltage capacitor can be weak or open or short. replace and the microwave will work.
Finally check the door switch the temperatrue cut off unit , the main relay and the control board.

I have a Samsung microwave model SMH7177STE/BE. Will only heat a few minutes before and shut off, now there is no heat. I am a licensed elect. but no experience with microwaves and having difficulty...

Its tripping a high limit most likely. Be careful there is 2100 to 4000 volt high side with a capacitor if its not an inverter. The standard components consist of noise board, fuse, touch panel and power controller, high limits, door switches, whipper motor, fan, transformer, capacitor, transformer, magnetron, diode, plate rotator.
Discharge cap (for safety and further testing).. Test fuse; if fuse tests blown test door switches first. Test limits. Check amp draw with slow blow fuse; open door to stop unit and again discharge capacitor. Test resistance to ground on whipper, fan, magnetron, light. Test resistance lead to lead (measurable on motors/coils/magnetron). Test capacitor in ferrads, compare to spec on print. Check diode forward and reverse. Test output voltage from power control board to transformer. Test transformer coils.
Best of luck and play safe; dont test voltage output from the transformer, voltage at capacitor or magnetron.

Our Jenn-Aire Model JMV8196AAS Microwave is not heating anything.

If it is working but not heating, then test the high voltage capacitor, the rectifier diode.or the magnetron. If all this are fine, test the control board. If turntable is not running check also the door switch.

The diodeand capacitors can be tested. The capacitor must be allowed discharge before testing, or you risk to get electrocuted, evenif power is off.Capacitors can get discharged by shorting their two contacts.
Before replacing the magnetron test also the control board.
Replace the magnetron if the checks and all of the high voltage component tests are good, but the unit still does not heat.

All locations, and description of this parts can be located using the diagram here: Counter top.

Parts must be tested to find out what is wrong.

Remember that microwaves are potentially dangerous devices if not repaired properly, the job must be done by a competent person.
A microwave energy leakage test must always be performed when the oven is serviced for any reason.

Regarding parts, contact the seller here to purchase parts.

You can also order from MicrowaveSvc , they also provide parts.

Microwave not heating when turned on

Well were do I start, the spark check to see if it is arking on the side panel inside, there should be a plastic cover and around it if it is black then the arking is there (this can be fix with touch up paint), meanwhile, the no heat would be cause by the bad magnetron, cap or power supply if it has one.
To see were you or going you will need to understand this is not safe, dangerous to tamper with unit,
Open the cover, at the big transformer, there will be a primery and secondary.
At the primery were two wires goes to the front were all the other wires or check to see if the voltage is present 120vac pulsing on and off when turning on the microwave, do not measure the secondery the voltage will be very high about 2k
If the voltage is present hit the big silver steal cassing at the top with a insulated tool, knowed as the magnetron to see if it will start , you will hear a mmmmm don't touch it, see if heat start inside, never leave the unit emty, put a cup of water. If it doesn't heat but the voltage is present replace the magnetron, it may also be the cap next to it,
If it has a power board after the transformer, then this would also be the problem, but I don't think you have one.

I hope this help

Oven stops after a few seconds

I like the information you give.
If the unit will work with the control Panel at a 45 degree angle it tells me you have a loose connection. The 45 degree angle puts enough pressure on the connection to keep it completed. With the Control Panel in it's normal position, the loose connection Heats and Opens the connection. After it cools connection is again made until it Heats up again. Remember Expansion, Contraction. I do not believe you have a Magnetron issue!! A Magnetron does not know if the Control Panel is at an angle.
Can you hear a slight "Click" when the unit shuts down? If so this is a relay opening. When you say you replaced the Control Board. Was this the Control Panel PC Board, or was it the Cook-Relay Control Board? A Door Switch not making solid contact can do this. Is your Door latching down solid? Check for loose connections, not open LOOSE.

Heat reduced to maybe 50%

The stirrer may have been causing the squeaking noise, and the low heat is most likely the magnetron.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part
