Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. Also, please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Hello and thanks so much for your advice in repairing my Sony CyberShot Camera.
My camera was working just fine, I plugged the usb to the computer to download the pic, and the lens went funky and started advancing and retracting, then I had an error on the screen stating I needed to turn off my camera and turn it back on again.
Everything I have tried in my own abilities haven't worked yet.
If...... you know of anything else I can try, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance..... Bajamo

Most of the lens issues due to mechanical problem. some of the causes are dropping the camera.
Hard shake like keeping the Camera in the hand and jump through steps, Moisture condensation, Insufficient battery.. etc If If you feel that the issue is not with the above reason. Remove the battery, reinsert after 2 minutes to perform a power reset and check the operation.
If the issue persists, service may be required.
Thanks for understanding

I accidentally dropped the camera from my hands (im a about 4'10"), and now when i turn it on it makes weird noises. Also, theres an alert that says "turn the power off and on again" on the camera screen,...

Hello,

If the camera has been dropped and badly damaged - physically, best to do is to send it to the nearest Authorized Dealer for proper check-up or repair. As, we cannot determine the physical deffect inside the camera creating an unwanted noise and cannot perform well. Above link is the Sony Cybershot help desk. They might help you with this.

Please also check if this is still part of the warranty. This may also help you with the billing and other concerns.

I had the same problem with my DSC-W55. I actually just called the customer service number on the sony website and they told me how to solve the problem.

- Take your battery out
- Press and hold the power button for 60 seconds
- Re enter your battery
- Voila.. it should work when you turn it on. Mine did.

Same thing here Tankengine. My problem started when my camera took a spill of about 4 feet. After that I've been getting the same message you have been. I've sent a message to Sony so hopefully they will have an answer. Something tells me it's going to involve sending the camera away, and spending money on an old camera.
