If your having problem turning the engine through ... remvoe the spark plug and use regular oil in the cylinder. Tilt it so that the plug hole is straight up and pour about 1 ounce of oil in the cylinder. Then pull it through with the starting rope. I would do this several times until the cylinder appear to free up. You have corrosion on the cylinder walls. The oil will help the piston and rings scrape off that corrosion. After the oil then use mixed gas in the spark plug hole and pull it through again. Make sure the gas is purged then attempt a regular start. If it has been is storage for a long time you may have to change the diaphram in the carb as they dry out and get holes in them / crack after being cycled with new fuel. Good Luck.

Installing a spring in an MS240 Stihl chain saw

I have not worked on you type saw. I have put new starter springs in other saws. One end of the spring fits into the housing and the other in the pulley. Once you have that done there should be a notch in the pulley that you put the rope into that will allow the spring to be wound up without taking up the rope. It is a trial error problem now. If the spring is wound too tight you will not get full rope travel. If it is too loose tilt will not pull the rope in fully.

one piston ring has expanded now having no or a very fine gap increasing the compression ratio causing this to happen. When the spark plug is removed it is very easy to pull on the cord in any means. A inspection is due of this engine or a new chain saw is needed

If someone put the wrong sparkplug in the saw it would do the same thing. The plug threads could be too long and when the piston comes up it hits the plug and stopps. If the electrodes on the new plug extend farther out of the sparkplug the piston will come up and hit it and the engine will not turn.

Starter rope will not pull out all the way. What could the problem be?

There are two possible reasons, one is the rope is too short, or two the starter spring is wound too tight, and is coil binding, start by fitted a new starter cord, and re tention the spring, so as you still can turn the pulley by hand at least a further 1/2 turn with the cord fully out ( to avoid coil binding the spring )

This saw has been in storage but looks good the rope is to tight and its verry hard to pull,it only turns once its that normal if not what can i do

Remove the spark plug and try to pull the starter through. If it now pulls through easily, the cylinder head may be full of old fuel. Pull it through a number of times to expel the old fuel, then replace the plug and try for normal start. If still hard to pull, the engine may have been run on straight gasoline instead of oil/fuel mix. If so, the piston, ring(s), and cylinder may have been severely scored which then require replacement. At this point, consider the cost of a new saw versus repair costs running over $100 if you farm out the work. Hope this helps!

Answer to 2 year old question about hard starting saw. There is a seal that goes bad and leaks chain oil into the crankcase. This will make it very hard or impossible to pull the starter rope. To start the saw, pull the spark plug, stand the saw on it's end so the bar is pointed up and pull the rope 10-15 times. Replace the spark plug and start. It will smoke for a while. To stop this from happening, always store the saw with the bar pointed straight down.

Rewind sticks

Was the saw dropped on it's left side? Remove the entire starter housing and look for bent metal parts. Does the cord operate normally when off of the saw? Unless the housing was crushed, usually you can bend some of the internal metal parts to get the spool to turn freely. Hope this helps!

Broken Pull String

Yes, it is possible that the spring needs to be pre-tensioned. its also possible that something was put together a little out of alignment, or some part is too tight and its too hard for the spring to wind in the chord. try to reassemble the chainsaw with a couple more turns on the spring and see if that helps.

Wild Thing-(18")hard starting

I own the Poulan Chain Saw the Wild Thing. Replaced the spark plug and fuel filter and made a fresh batch of gasoline mix and I am still having a hard time getting it started. I had the exact same problem last fall. Repair shop told me it was flooded. If this is the case how do I resolve the problem. I took the plug out and it was dry.

Thanks,

**** Hansen
