Is the AF/M switch set to "A"? Switch is just below lens release button.

I have a Nikon D200 and the auto focus isn't working on any of my lenses. What should I try?

There's a small contact area that has to make the electrical contact between the lens and body in order for the autofocus to work. Check this on the body for any damage or corrosion that may keep the connection from happening. There is also a very small mechanical connection between the two pieces - the D200 has the autofocus motor in the body itself - check for a small shaft that may be blocked or damaged as well.

My Nikon D200 just started locking when I depressed the shutter. It gave me the R25 reading in the view finder. If I depress the ae focus lock it fires. What is going on? Cmaclennan@verizon.net

Check your Custom Setting Menu, a1-a10:AUTOFOCUS.

Press Menu, select the Custom Menu Setting (looks like a pencil).
Select "AUTOFOCUS" and move to right.

a1 AF-C Mode Priority. Set to "Focus"

a2 AF-S Mode Priority. Default is "Focus", change this to "Release". This will enable the camera to fire anytime you press the shutter, regardless of if it's in focus or not. Use this setting if your having problems locking up, especially using some different lenses.

Try these settings. They may work for you.

Very soft focus on D200

Hi Amanda, welcome to FixYa.

Try this to fix your focusing issue. It's a custom AF setting.
Press the Menu and select the pencil icon. Then you'll see Custom Setting Menu on the LCD display. Click down to Autofocus and then click to the right.
There are 3 choices here: FPS Rate, FPS Rate + AF, and Focus.
Set it to Focus.
FPS Rate is the default setting, the camera will take 5 frames per second whether it's in focus or not.
FPS Rate+ AF forces it to slow down hoping to get more frames in focus.
Focus sets the camera to fire only when in perfect focus. It slows you down some, but it will save you from deleting all the blurry ones.

Try this and let me know if it works for you with a comment.

Lcd preview blank d200

you cannot "Preview" shots on the LCD screen with the D200. There is no Live View function. Newer models such as D300 and D90 offers such a feature.

Nikon D200 refuses to auto focus with any lens it just doesn't do anything.

Does the camera body has a M/AFswitch? it would be located in front on the left side if that accidently gets changed to M your lens will not AF any more until you change it?? I know it sounds so simple but who knows!! Barry Brown

80~200 not focusing on my D200

If lens has aperture ring, set to min aperture before mounting (f22 etc)
With heavier lenses it is not so easy to tell when lens clicks in all the way to mount, Lens wont autofocus if not clicked in to mount just so. Also both camera and lens should be set to AF.

Nikon D200 problem with SIGMA 28-200 lens - works on one D200 and not my other

Sigma lenses sometimes need re-chipping for full compatability with certain Nikon camera. They are usually quite good about doing this gratis.
Try the Sigma on another body at the camera shop or at home (preferably and older AF film camera). If it works then its likely just a chip compatibility issue.

Nikon D200

My first question would be what lens are you using - some lenses have auto stability features - please post lens make, type, model number and when you purchased it.

REPAIR

OK guys, it seems to be the lenses motor which for some reason burns out. I put a Nikkor 50mm 1.4 mm AF(great lens by the way) on the d200 body and it works fine. I sent the 18-200 in for repair and I won't tell you how much they wanted to charge me to fix it, thank God it's still under warrantee. Suggest you all try out another AF lens on the D200 body to see how that works. If ok then send in your boom lens and pray that your not over the 1 year warrantee limit.
