Question about Samsung Portable 120GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive

4 Answers

USB HDD no longer recognized 1. The drive, La Cie 1T, has worked successfully on this computer for several months and still works ok on my other computer 2. I used a Reg cleaner/ system cleanser which must have knocked something out 3. I am running W7 HP 4. The computer configuration does not show the drive at all, yet when I try to disconnect the USB device it is listed! 4. The device manager shows: under USB: a Mass storage device attached under diskdrives: the La Cie as Samsung HD103SI USB device. Drivers ok, everything is normal except when under ?Volume? I try to Populate it, it remains blank I have restored my system without fixing the problem Good luck Rick Nauta

    Dear Azr
That would be easy if the drive was showing, but it is NOT, at the moment the disk management won't even run, at least after 10 mins, there is still nothing at all showing!

I use one of the best Anti Virus packages: CA; I just ran an scan and all it could find was 4 cookies! So you better put your thinking cap on and try again! Microsoft Technet show a number of similar problems, but instead of spending hours going through all these, I thought you as expert, might have come this problem before - apparently not!

Perhaps I should ask for a second opinion!

May I suggest you read carefully my problem statement and follow up, before giving any lecture. I am a retired IT Pro and have been in computers for 50+ years.

Both computers run W7 HP, the only differernce is that the one that recognises the USB drive is 64bit.

One reason why it is not recognized is that the ports that you connected to it is not working. You try to restart the pc and insert the USB HDD to any ports available on your pc. You might try to use another USB cable to isolate the problem. If symptom persist, the USB driver is the one that is not working. You might try to uninstall/reinstall the USB driver and then insert the USB HDD in your system...

Rick

The questions I have for you is what version of Windows is on the computer that the drive is working on and what version is on the computer the drive is not working on?

I ask this because I had an external that would not be detected by my ether of my XP computers. However at the time I had a friend that had a computer with Vista on it and it would see the drive. He would run disk clean up on the drive on his system and it would work for some time with my XP system and then I would have the same problem.

I did learn later on that Vista and 7 do not use MBR for the file table so it is possible that if you do a format on the drive to rebuild the MBR this might fix the problem. I never got a chance to try this with that drive because it had gotten stolen.

Let me know how things go

Letter conflict: windows has assigned to the disk a letter that is already in use.
In the Computer Management window, under Storage, click on Disk Management to see a list of drives connected to your machine. You should be able to determine which one is the drive you're trying to access by its size and format type.  Right-click on the drive and select Change Drive Letter and Paths option, click on the Change button. Select from a list of drive letters to rename it. Pick a letter toward the end of the alphabet for best results. You will be prompted with a warning dialogue making sure you want to change the drive letter, click Yes.
That should be it, now it will be visible.

If the Disk Management doesn't run then Windows is corrupted, something far worse than a mismanaged letter. This wasn't caused by a cleaner, you have malware in your pc. Backup all your files  and do a full reinstall immediately, or you risk losing everything. And next time use a better antivirus.

CA is a POS - the last 2 versions use the older, obsolete version of the Kaspersky antivirus engine, its footprint is huge and the scan speed is ridiculously slow. You'll be way better of you replace it even with the Microsoft one.

Instead of Disk Management you can use a separate , more powerful program like
    http://www.partition-tool.com/
But it will not fix your underlying problem - you have corruption in your system and the cause for why you have it. Your call - if you can't accept the truth then prepare for the consequences, cause they will come, you can be sure of that.

I don't know whether it's showing on the My Computer or not, since you didn't mention it. Sometimes external Hdd shows up in the My Computer without drive name i.e. Unknown device etc.. In that case, assigning the Drive letter from the Disk Management will fix the issue.

First try this, remove all the usb devices connected on your computer, restart your computer and connect the Hdd through the usb port (the device connected through the usb port on the computer should be only the hdd you are trying to fix).

Now directly get into the Device Manager and navigate to the Disk Management, then right-click on the drive and assign a new drive letter name.

On the other hand, this is not possible for few reasons, but the fact is because of virus/spyware,etc..etc.. in that case, no need to try this, better run a full system scan using an updated antivirus, not only one antivirus is recommended, you should try installing, scanning and uninstalling with several antiviruses (there are many free antiviruses available online and don't ever install two/multiple antivirus/es at a time on a system).

I can't give you specific solution right now, but let me know after you are done with this.

It may be showing in the Device Manager's devices lists, but it may not show up on the My Computer, but at least it should show up on the Disk Management if it shows on the Device Manager.

Let me know when you are done.

Good luck.

Are you sure you are using the best antivirus? I don't think there's such, if Norton doesn't detect, then some antiviruses like Avira or AVG can easily detect them only at the first attempt, so we can't assure an antivirus as best or worst.

You are right, this problem is very common, but there are also several methods to fix..., if the previous solution doesn't helpful, you should reply the post with more details and whatever you've done with it. I though I've mentioned "Let me know when you are done." at the end of my first post, if I didn't, forgive me.

It could also be registry entry issues or could be something else.

Well, if you prefer ......................., i opt out.

    Good luck.

How do I transfer from my la cie to my computer

Remove the USB module from the LaCie Write Card and plug it into a free USB port on your computer. Your computer should assign a new drive letter to the USB module (such as D: or higher letter). In Windows use Windows Explorer (on a Mac use File Manager) and you will be able to copy files from your LaCie USB module to your computer.

How do i transfer my data from my old la cie 80 gig 107443, to my new la cie 250 gig 300770? both boxes look the same, with the same connections [firewire, usb, 2 others].

Connect both drives to the computer at the same time. If you don't have enough USB ports, connect one to a USB port and the other to a Firewire port. Open a file management window (Explorer in Window, Finder in Mac OS) for each drive. Click and hold the left mouse button (only mouse button on most Mac models in the window for the 80 Gig drive and drag across several folders/files to select them. Release the mouse button, then click on and drag the selected group to the new drive window. When this copy operation is done, repeat with another group of files.

You could select (-A or -A) and drag everything on the old drive at one time, but sometimes the system will bog down on copying large amounts of data (greater than 4-8 GB at a time).

Hello,
your drive has failed at either the power supply level or internal hard drive level.
First, please verify your power supply. When plugged into the power outlet, it should be silent. A defective power supply will hiss or have a high pitch noise to it. If it is defective, replace it and check if the issue is resolved.
If the power supply is silent, one or both of the internal hard drive is failing. If no data is needed, you can either replace the defective one which you will have to isolate by connecting the internal hard drives to a computer or with another enclosure and running a block scan software like hdTune which is free to download. The other option would be to scavenge the healthy drive and use it in another enclosure or inside the computer directly.
If you need the data and the problem was not the power supply, you will need to contact a data recovery center.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Help transferring files from computer hard drive to La Cie

Well you can ONLY transfer/Move DATA as Programs and Documents & Settings and User Directories, cannot be shifted at all. So It is only the Files and Data that can be Moved off a drive. To gain space back, Right Click on the HDD, go to properties, in properties Under the general, tab the first window, select disk cleanup, remove everything in those boxes and after, that look under Tools tab, & do a disk defragment. This may get you space back. If not you may have to get a new bigger drive, and clone your old drive, then install the new drive and reinstall the Cloned image back onto the new drive?

La cie hard drive

it's very likely your LaCie power supply is foobar and can no longer supply the current needed by the HDD. happens with a lot of external hdd enclosures with cheap power supplies - hook it in and turn it on without being connected to USB first, wait abit, then hook up the USB.
