My mom has a Kenmore washer model# 13212200. It has been sitting unused for 4 years. I ran the machine to make sure all was working and all was fine until it got to the rinse/spin cycle. It would not...

If the washer fills normally, begins the wash cycle, then stops at the spin cycle and won't drain, then you need to check your lid switch and/or lid strike. This is the most common cause of the problem you are experiencing. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that will not drain.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

A replacement lid switch (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

The average price is about $20 - $30 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices differ between sites so shop and compare. The part number for a replacement switch for the model number you provided is 3949247. The lid strike (also called an "actuator') part number is 350733.

If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. The lid switch is a very simple repair that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.

If this advice does not help you enough, has a Repair Manual you can order to assist you with all your repairs. The part number is 1170635 and is priced at about $20. also has a repair manual for about the same price. Part number 4314044L. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Kenmore 70 Series will not Rinse or spin

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

One way to check if the Lid Switch is bad is to by-pass it.

See GURU JSROCK516 Description of how to remove cabinet and access the transmission.

Rather than removing the entire cabinet, just go through the process for removing the Console and up-plugging the lid switch.

Use a short piece of insulated wire and jumper the switch between the outer two contacts.

Lower the console and start the washer in the shortest cycle that you can.

After it fills part way, stop it and move the dial to the rinse cycle.

If it rinses and spins, the problem is in the switch which is basically held on by a couple of screws.

Of the washer still will not rinse or spin, the problem is likely in the timer.

Without knowing your model number, I couldn't tell you what a switch costs but it should be around $30.

If I'm correct in assuming that your model uses a switch with two screws, (check the Sears parts list for your washer under the Top and Cabinet category for the LID SWITCH) tightening the screws may solve your problem. The Diagram for the Top and Cabinet will show you where the screws connect.

Replace lid switch

You will need to not only remove the control panel, but you will also need to remove the washer casing from the frame in order to acces the switch. It sounds intimidating, but really isn't that difficult to do. The following link explains how to replace a lid switch:

Your washer is manufactured by Whirpool, so these instructions will apply. Most commonly, the lid switch is located under the washer casing along the right hand side of the lid. If the model number you have this listed under is correct, your switch is under the washer casing near the right lid hinge. The mounting screw(s) and ground connector are under the operator console. For clarification, you can refer to for some excellent exploded view diagrams to assist you. The lid switch is located under the "Top and Cabinet Parts" heading.

If you have any questions about this repair, or need additional assistance, please let me know.

Faulty Lid Switch

A lid switch repair is fairly simple and not expensive if you do it yourself. The following link explains how to access and replace:

Your washer differs slightly from most Whirlpool manufactured top loaders in that your lid switch is located under the operator console next to the left lid hinge. The instructions for access still apply, but you may want to remove the casing from the frame for better access due to the location of the switch. With the console lifted up, you will notice the white plastic lid switch connector plug. Unplug it and remove the mounting to screw to remove the switch.

The switch has a rod from the washer lid inserted through it to act as the actuator for contacting the switch when the lid is down. If you can toggle the switch by hand, all you may have to do is adjust the rod by bending it slightly to make better contact.

If you determine the switch IS defective, the part number is 8318084 and can be purchased at any of the following websites:

You can try any web source you like, but I have found these sites to be reliable and have decent prices. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number provided to your nearest applianceparts retailer. This is a common part that most will carry in their in-store inventory.

If you have any questions about this repair, or need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Lady Victoria, you are going to have to remove the cabinet to get to the lid switch. Remove the two screws from the back of the top consol and flip it up. Unplug the lid switch and remove the snap springs. The cabinet will now lift off and you can get at the lid switch. I will attach some helpful back
