Hello ra_wright,

Please check the following:
1.) you have keyboard volume up, down and mute buttons on your laptop they are usually Fn +PgUP or PgDn or Fn +End(which will mute your sound off). Otherwise you'll see the proper keys with a subtext in blue that is indiated by icons. As you use these keyboard keys you should see an onscreen display of the volume changing.

2.) If the above does not work look at the area next to your time of day display for a speaker icon and double click it. You should then see the volume sliders for all sound functions of your laptop. Check that the sliders are in the up position and the mute button is not check (other than your microphone).

3.) There is also a sound icon in Control Panel and this set of pages for it has further functions, such as selecting or de-selecting your sound card. You may need to review those too.

If you have external speakers attached checked that it is firmly plugged in by removing and reinserting and then (and I know this sound brutally simple but), see that they are plugged in and powered on. If they are powered by batteries check them too.

If you have found that this set of solutions I have offered has fixed your problem PLEASE rate this problem as Fixed by clicking on the fixed icon below.

If you have further questions, reply to the post and Ask Me. I'll be glad to help you through this.

Kind Regards,
Glenn

Check the audio device in the Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager is working and enabled. If not then re-install the audio driver.
You can download the device drivers from the Sony WEB site.
Select your model notebook and the Windows XP or Vista drivers you require. Please click on this link to the Sony support WEB site :-

If the sound driver is OK then check if the MUTE has been selected and check the volume level, is it set to a low level?

Windows vista sound not coming-sony vaio

First thing to do is check if your soundcard driver is behaving.

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager

and check if the soundcard driver is flagged with a yellow exclamation. If this is the case, head off to the Sony site and try to download a new copy of your sound drivers to install.

If this doesn't work, post back here to see what to try next.
