Question about Rheem Water Heater LP Gas Valve

1 Answer

I have a Rheem water heater for a spa. Lately it's been intermitant whether it goes on not. Someone suggested that the gas company needed to install a lager meter/regulator as the heater isn't getting enough gas. I had that done last week and there's no change. Another person says I may have water in the gas line. Your thoughts?

Did the gas company check the pressure?
propane = "11" to 13" water collumn
natural gas = 3" to 4.5" water collumn

I have actually had the valve go bad, replaced, everything worked great.
also check the thermocouple. this is a cheap repair and the most common problem. if this doesn't solve the problem, then I would replace the gas valve. it is rare, but they do go bad. even had a bad one on a brand new water heater.

as far as water in the line, this too is very rare.

Yes, confirming that water in line is very rare. My guy told me he's seen it now twice in 25 years! Lucky me.

Rheem does not post service manuals.
One reason is that water heaters have changed rapidly last few years, and same model might have different features because Rheem experiments to see which products work after they are sold.

Calls to Rheem for DIY help are largely useless since they want you to call local installer or technician... who will sell you a new heater for more money.
Rheem wants to end DIY repairs since doing it yourself saves you money... which means Rheem, and Rheem-loyal service companies make less money.

Rheem water heater pilot lite stays lit, burner goes out

Tripped FV or TRD, or bad gas control valve, low gas pressure, air in gas line.

Unfortunately, Rheem does not post service manuals. Other companies post service manual, but only Rheem uses TRD FV system, while other companies use arrestor screen.

I have a paloma tankles water heater model #ptg-42pvn i am getting an intermitent error code C4,12. what is the problem?

http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-install-gas-water-heater.html#install

If unit worked before: Maybe bad PC board. Maybe lack of required yearly maintenance.
Common error codes can be caused by not following maintenance protocol such as cleaning combustion parts, checking gas pressure, checking venting, and air intake, bleeding gas line etc.
Too bad Rheem-Paloma manuals do not show HOW to conduct this maintenance, leaving customer with many unknowns, and no way to oversee that maintenance performed by hired technician is complete, and matches recommended maintenance.
Sell unit on ebay, and install tank-type gas water heater.

Rheem water heater flashes seven times ,it is in lock out mode

You have Honeywell electronic gas control valve, and error code is 7 flashes.
Probably you have power vent model.
One manual from different company says: "Reset gas control using on-off button on front of control, replace flammable vapor sensor, replace gas control thermostat.
But with Rheem you also need specific steps: Remove gas burner and look for broken glass vial, and then blow out arrestor screen air intake using compressed air, clean burner parts, check for unobstructed venting, you will need new glass vial from Rheem depending on year and model number of water heater that appears on label on side of unit, or they may not have a repair kit for that model, and you might need a new gas control valve depending on model and how extensive problem was

Rheem rtg-53pvn will not turn on and heat water when hot water is turned on - no error code - remote just goes off like the power is off

Before calling service technician, open following link for Rheem troubleshooting resources including Rheem chat:
Rheem will suggest you catch up on required yearly maintenance which would cover most causes for common error codes, and cover cause of no error code including plumbing problem or loose wire or PC board failure. Combination of problems can also cause failure and these issues would be covered by general maintenance.

I have the rheem pronto in one of my rentals and the water is cold all the time. Help!!!

3 items possibly:# 1) has that gas company turned off the gas lately to do some work?,and then re-fired the water heater after the work was completed? if so,check the temperature setting on the unit,as most gas companies upon re-start of gas appliances on their line will just set them to LOW,so as not to have an insurance issue with a scalding problem(from someone setting it TOO HIGH) if set above LOW temperature./ # 2) it could be limed up in the bottom and not have the capacity anymore to heat the full capacity of the unit due to this issue & needs shutting down and draining and a fresh re-fill. / #3) if the unit won't fire after the pilot has been lit(held down to keep lit) and then turned to a heat setting from pilot, you can have a defective thermocouple temperature sensor in the flame not letting the gas valve open fully to heat the unit

Noisy Rheem 16 instant hot water heater

About the only device in that heater that could cause the noise you describe is an electrically operated valve that controls water flow. Rheem is a better-than-average company so I would give them a call and describe your problem to them; I'll bet that they will be glad to tell you which part you need and supply it to you.
We had a heat pump system from Rheem that needed only the replacement of one large relay and the outside unit fan motor during more than 25 years of service and is still operating at age 30 in our former home.
