Why does my laptop turn itself off after i enter the settings f2 or f12

You cannot do this without installing an operating system first on the hard drive, that has the drivers for the advent laptop you are using.

It switches off because it cannot find the windows operating system.

Try and download a free copy of knoppix (Linux) to run from the CD/DVD drive to see what is on your hard drive.

It will give you a windows like environment to use the laptop.

Toshiba laptop L450/L450D satellite won,t reboot from hard disk drive

Try F12, F2 or F1 on power up to get into the boot menu.
Once in there change the boot sequence to try booting from the CD/DVD drive first and hard drive second. There are various options to download a rescue disk based on Linux on the internet. They download as .iso files which you save onto a CD/DVD.

You need to do this on another computer connected to the internet.

My favourite is KNOPPIX as it is a windows type GUI desktop. you can then try to repair you hard drive. Knoppix will exist in RAM only as long as the computer is turned on, so it wont damage your computer.

Hp notebook has broken screen and hardrive errors, how can boot or rescover from other laptop in order to instruct the broken pc to bootup from the connected other laptop

Solutions:-
1. Plug in an external monitor to replace the laptop screen, then you should be able to see something.
2. Go to a web site called knopper.net on anther PC, and download a "live" copy. Burn it on to a CD and boot from it, on your PC.
Then you will have a working PC and can start to recover your data on to flash drive, before trying to fix the hard disc errors.
Knoppix is a Linux operating system, but contains facilities to fix the hard drive, but it could damage your data, so save as much as you can before attempting to fix hard drive.

Do i have to program this memory card 4gb

All you need to do is format the card and copy files to it. Windows typical filesystems
  • FAT
  • FAT16
  • FAT32
  • NTFS

Linux typical filesystems
  • ext2
  • ext3
  • ext4

Apple typical filesystems
  • HFS+

Windows really only see's it's own
Linux can see all of them
Apple can see all of them

So formatting in FAT32 or NTFS would be seen by any operating system

I cant access files on my western digital 612 gb external hard drive. I have tried trouble shooting and the disk is not recognized. It says the data is unreadable. I hear the disk spinning, the light is...

take your harddrive to someone who has a linux operating system. have them open terminal and perform a dmesg. if the linux system recognizes the harddrive, have them perform a mount. if unsucessful have them perform a foced filesystem fix. then have them attempt to mount the clean filesystem if this is a nogo, your harddrive is deader than dead. if the linux user can mount the filesystem, he or she can pull your data and save your life. if not, then uhh you lost your data im afraid.

WINXP-_CRASH

I wonder if you ever pay attention to what you're doing; if you install a Linux Distribution, it's going to have a non-NTFS boot sector, and moving Windows' original boot sectors around is not guaranteed to work well.

If you pay attention to what you're doing, you should be installing Linux on a fresh disk using a good filesystem like ext3 or ext4 or Sun's filesystem. If you want to run WinXP rather than run applications (games, etc.) under WINE or a VM, you can use Disk Commander or such to boot to the old drive and mask the OS from each others' existence. Likewise you could install, run, etc. Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. from within a VM in WinXP; or install, run, etc. WinXP within a VM in a Linux. If you don't pay attention to what your install means for the system operation, you're going to get surprised.

Error when system is turn on. says it can't load operating system . Biostar mother board. Model MCP6P M2+

Somehow the filesystem got corrupt. It could be the hard drive going out because this is a sign of hardware failure. Sometimes you can temporarily restore it by fixing the MBR (Master Boot Record) using your windows cd, or Linux cd if you have that, just load the disc at boot and enter the Repair section.

Fsck error HELP! HELP ! HELP!

fsck is a file system error check command. Try the root password of nothing, (just the enter key), when ask for the password. Then use the fsck command to repair the file system before rebooting.
fsck - check and repair a Linux file system Try fsck with no options.
SYNOPSIS fsck [ -sACVRTNP ] [ -t fstype ] [filesys ... ] [--] [ fs-specific-options ]
DESCRIPTION fsck is used to check and optionally repair one or more Linux file systems. filesys can be a device name (e.g. /dev/hdc1, /dev/sdb2), a mount point (e.g. /, /usr, /home), or an ext2 label or UUID specifier (e.g. UUID=8868abf6-88c5-4a83-98b8-bfc24057f7bd or LABEL=root). Normally, the fsck program will try to run filesystems on different physical disk drives in parallel to reduce total amount time to check all of the filesystems.
If no filesystems are specified on the command line, and the -A option is not specified, fsck will default to checking filesystems in /etc/fstab serial. This is equivalent to the -As options.
