Why does my central air keep freezing up?

An air conditioner freezing up is either low airflow or low on refrigerant. If the filter is clean, then check the refrigerant level, blower running at proper speed, make sure indoor coil is not dirty or restricted. Make sure that the duct outlets are all open and some have not been closed.

While in heat mode the condenser freezes up.1200 model

This is how air conditioners work.

They transfer heat from (usually) hot places to cooler places.

When working in the opposite direction, the machine is attempting to pump heat from the cool place (making it colder) to the warm place (making it warmer).

Flushing the frozen condenser with cold water adds more heat to defrost the condenser, but it will refreeze when you try extracting more heat from the cold place.

It may be the fan in the back of the freezer. If this goes out the cold air can no longer circulate upwards. One symptom of this is the water line freezes.

My carrier heat pump has frosting on the outside on it's coils. I know that it's cold outside but is that normal?

Yes it is normal especially with high humidity. The moisture freezes on the coils just like on the evaporator coils in a freezer. The heat pump will defrost itself by shutting off the fan outside and reverse the flow of refrigerant to melt the ice when it build up then switch back to normal heat. That's why at times you may feel cold air coming out of the vents in the house. The outside coils are defrosting.

You are either low on refrigerant, dirty coil or filter or your blower is not working or running at the proper speed. Make sure you have the blower on high speed, then, if it freezes up you are probably low on refrigerant. You need to have a HVAC service technician check it out, unless you are fimiliar with or work on air conditioning systems.

if you are not getting the desired temp in the freezer with the temp control knob, partially block off a small portion of the vent at the bottom with some tape. You could do the same with the vent at the top, the idea is to create a small air restriction. also if you dont add warm product to the freezer very often it has little heat to remove. you may put a gallon jug of warm water in it periodically.

Coil freezes up

Usually when the indoor coil freezes up you either have dirty filters or coil but if you had this unit replaced last year your coil and filters are probably OK so you probably have a leak in the unit and are low on refrigerant.
