Question about Nikon Coolpix 4600 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Every card I put in the Nikon Coolpix says "this card cannot be used." We haven't used the camera in a while and they are standard cards...any ideas?

What size cards? The 4600 only uses SD cards, not SDHC cards. If your cards are larger than 2GB then they won't work in the 4600.

Having gone over a month without a response to my query regarding card size, I assume it was just a SD/SDHC mismatch.

if your computer does not have a slot for the memory card built in, then there should be an adapter that is available for the card, that will plug into the usb of the computer

I haven't cd with software (Nikon Photoshare) to download my digital images from my Nikon coolpix L3 camera to my PC. Can you help my?

You can download the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from
http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Camera works with standard SD memory card, but not SDHC

There are hardware incompatibilities between SD and SDHC cards. They're upward compatible in that SDHC devices will accept SD cards but not the other way around. You will have to hunt down SD cards, 2GB and smaller.

Nikon coolpix s51, lost the adaptor for connection between laptop and camera. where can i get a new one? friend has a nikon coolpix as well. cant understand why his cable doesn't fit.

Nikon usually uses a standard fitting , but there are now 5 or six different "standard" USB tips (see Wikipedi article about USB if you want pictures. GE makes an adapter cable with interchnageable tips. You can also get the replacement cord thru any Nikon dealer (if they are willing to order it for you), But my personal choice is to get a digital media card reader instead and remove the card from the camera and read it thru the card reader- multi format card readers can be bought at office supply stores for under $20 and sometimes OfficeDepot puts their Aptiva brand single format card readers on sale for $5

CoolPix 5000 "OUT OF MEMORY" message that we can't figure out

At 4GB size, your memory card is likely a SDHC card, and not a standard SD card. Although they look the same, there is a difference in formatting. Unfortunately your model camera was designed before the SDHC format came out, and it will not work with your camera. But fortunately standard SD cards are very inexpensive these days, and you should be able to purchase a good 2GB standard card for around $6 with shipping:

Nikon coolpix 5700 shows no memory left after purchasing a new card & batteries

The largest CompactFlash card that Nikon approved for the 5700 is 256MB, which is what I'm using in my 5700. That's small by today's standards and you probably won't even find it in stores. I see some web sellers have 256MB cards for only $6 or so. Other commercial card sellers on the web claim that the 5700 will handle CF cards up to 1GB capacity. That's what I might try since online they're selling for as little as $8 plus shipping. Given that the 5700 was introduced in 2002, any cards bigger than 1GB probably won't work.

No memory card will work in my Coolpix camera

Nikon has tested the following cards and approved their use in the Coolpix 3200:

SD memory cards:
SanDisk 16/32/64/128/256MB
Panasonic 16/32/64/128/256/512
Toshiba 16/32/64/128/256MB

Other brands and capacities of cards may work, but Nikon cannot guarantee their operation. Check with the manufacturer of the third-party card for compatibility information. Nikon recommends keeping one of the approved cards available for troubleshooting.

Multi Media cards (MMC) are not recommended and should not be used.
