If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased for about $10 - $15. The part number is included in the link I provided above. If you have any questions about this repair, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Washer tub doesn't spin

Check the lid switch first. You should be able to manually depress the switch and hear an audible "click". If you don't , then that is likely the problem. Does the unit agitate when full of water? If it doesn"t agitate or spin then you likely have a broken motor coupling.

If I move the agitator manually I can hear water splashing inside even though it is empty and dry

When you move the agitator, your are also turning the motor which is connect to the pump. The water sound you are hearing is the water that is left in the pump.

Washer fills but does not agitate, drains fills again but still no agitation. Drains again and spins. Any suggestions? Model vbxr1060v1ww

there is a coupling between the motor and the agitator coming out of the gear box if you can hear the motor running when the agitator should be moving then that will be your best bet however if the motor is not running during what should be the agitation cycle then you are probably looking at the sequencer control Good Luck

Washing machine will fill with water, but won't articulate

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

I assume that you mean after filling, it won't begin the agitate cycle.

If you can hear the motor but the agitator won't move, it could be the "motor coupling". (See the motor section of the Sears site. This coupling is a fail safe between the motor and transmission. If the plastic prongs break, or the rubber center piece wears out, the transmission cannot agitate the washer.

If you can't hear the motor, it could be a timer problem.

Try to manually move the timer to a spin position and see if the motor / transmission move. If they do, it is most likely a timer.

Whirlpool washer does not agitate/wash but the spin cycle seems to work. I've found that the bottom section of the agitator blades are turning but the top section does not turn. I can also turn the top...

Hi,
The problem that your washing machine is not agitating, you will need to check certain things.
Please check the timer to see if it is in good working order or not. Next you will need to check the motor and the motor switch. On some of the newer washers the door switch also controls the motor.
If the motor starts running after the washer has filled to the selected level, but the agitator doesn’t move, you will need to check the following parts.

The agitator dogs. They are located inside of the agitator clothes mover. You will need to remove them and check to see if they are in need of been replace.
The clothes mover. This part is the top part of the dual action agitator. Its job is to move the clothes from the top of the spin drum to the bottom part of the agitator.
You will also have to check the inside of the clothes mover to make sure that the gear like cuts are not worn out.
However another problem could be a broken motor coupler.

Thank you for contacting Fixya.com

Machine won't spin or agitate

Jumptrout51 answered befro I posted and I believe him to be correct, it makes the most sence to me. A drive coupling has to attach the motor to the transmission and pump to make agitate and spin. You are most likely hearing just the motor but its not attached to anything like it should be. On older machines this is the equalivant of a broken belt.

Kemore 90 Serieswashing machine fills and spins but won't agitate

Remove the agitator and see if the agitator shaft moves during agitate. If it moves then the agitator spline is worn or the agitator dogs are worn and the top half of the agitator will not work. If no results then the gearcase would have to be replaced

Old model rca washer machine...will not agitate/wash the clothes, does spin.

If the washer fills up with water and you hear the motor running but the agitator doesn’t move, the agitator coupling is the most likely problem. First pump the water out by turning the timer to spin. Once the water is out, turn the washer off. Now pull up on the agitator until it comes off (it may be hard to pull off). Now that the agitator is off, you can see the agitator coupling, reach down and try to turn the coupling. If the coupling turns freely, it is striped out and needs to be replaced.
