Question about Homelite Garden

1 Answer

I have an old Homelite XL chainsaw that still works but that could use some carburetor adjustment because it frequentlyshuts down between cuts. I do not have a manual and I did not see one listed. Suggestions on how to adjust carb? Cheers Mike

The H jet needle should be set so that the engine will 4-stroke at full speed, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting. The L jet needle should be set so that the engine will 'follow the throttle', but idle fairly well. Adjust the idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine will continue to run. Check the fuel lines for condition and the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Make sure the carburetor fasteners are tight. Hope this helps!

Homelite xl-98c will not start

Changing a spark plug rarely fixes a no start problem. You need to troubleshoot the saw more. Do a search on youtube or google about how to check for spark and how to check to see that the carburetor is getting fuel.

My dad owns a 3 yr old Homelite chainsaw. he is bringing it to me to repair. The chainsaw runs great and as it warm up the idle will rise to the point were it is full throttle and you can't get it to idle...

Check the throttle trigger assembly for free play. You may have to remove the handle section over the trigger to remove sawdust/dirt. Idle changes are usually due to air leakage behind the carburetor--check all fasteners on the carburetor including the ones holding the carburetor to the cylinder. Check the muffler and air cleaner for plugging. Check the cylinder for looseness to the crankcase. Check the throttle return spring on the carburetor to make sure that it is working correctly. Hope some of this helps!

How to remove plastic limiter cap on (H) carburetor adjustment

If plastic cap is present, it should just pop off with a thin sharp hook. Look carefully at the screw heads--they may be 'D' heads which require a special screwdriver and are supposed to keep owners from moving the screws (thank the EPA for these). Only authorized saw servicing dealers have access to these tools and therefore are the only folks allowed to adjust these saws. Being nonconformist, I made my own by drilling the center of a 1/4" rod, sawed off one side somewhat and welded a flat across the cut. Hope this helps!

Homelite chainsaw won't stay running

Make sure you are using fresh fuel mix (50:1 ratio). Don't use boat motor oil in a saw--only modern synthetics made for saws. Always premix the oil and fuel thoroughly before adding to the saw. Check the fuel filter for plugging and the condition of all fuel lines, plus the primer bulb condition. Check all carburetor fasteners for tightness. Make sure the air filter and muffler are not plugged. If still no help, you may need to service the carburetor. For an excellent article on Walbro carburetors, go to: http://www.drystacked.com Pay particular attention to the placement of the lower diaphragm and the cover gasket--interchanging positions of them cause many headaches. Adjustment of the two jet screws require a special 'D' screwdriver which may necessitate a trip to a servicing dealer for adjustment. Hope this helps!

Carburator adjustment for Homelite xl 12 chain saw

Turn both screws CW to stops (lightly), then back out each CCW 1-1/2 turns. This should get the engine running if it will. If it does not, check the lower diaphragm on the carburetor for hardness or cracking. You appear to be running on prime only--the carburetor doesn't seem to be pumping in fresh fuel. You may need to do a carburetor clean and re-kit. Check the fuel line condition and the fuel filter in the tank for plugging. Make sure the muffler and air cleaner are not plugged. Once you get the engine to continue running, warm the engine up. Open the throttle and adjust the H needle CW--the engine should start to speed up, but still 4-stroking. The proper setting is 4-stroking, but immediately 2-stroke when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle CW so that the engine runs fairly smoothly, yet will allow the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Set idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Homelite xl chainsaw revved up & quit and won't start now

I suspect you have a fuel delivery problem or a dirty carburetor. As a chain saw runs out of fuel they often revv slightly (running lean). HTH

I have a xl 12 homelite-it starts up but when you rev it up it dies-any ideas?

You will need to disassemble the carburetor and spray with carb.cleaner. Make sure the small screen in the carb. is free of debris. Use a Den Tek Brush, (http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=165357&catid=1152), to clean the small portals in carb. These portals can become blocked. Reassemble and start.

(NOTE: If the carburetor parts are more than four years old, and depending on the use, you will need a new carb. kit if the cleaning doesn't work.)

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Homelite saw runs wide open(homelite ut10520)

There is a recall on the UT models, all you have to do is call the costumer service center for homelite. they will give you a number for the closest warrenty center that will adjust you throttle cable free of charge. I went through two UT 10520's before i started researching the problem.
