You open the back by pulling upwards on the rewind crank. The rewind crank is on the top of the camera on the left (as you look through the viewfinder) in the center of the knob that sets the film speed. The crank is folded into the knob. DON'T open the back until you have rewound the film. You will have to press a button on the bottom of the camera to release the film before you can rewind.
It will be a lot easier if you can get an experienced person to show you the first time.
Pull the film rewind knob all the way out and the back should pop open.
It's on page 2 of the manual. If you didn't get a manual, you can download one from http://butkus.org/chinon/vivitar_cameras/vivitar_v3800n/vivitar_v3800n.htm
Hi, The battery does not affect the back cover opening. The back can be opened by lifting up on the film rewind knob but on this model, there is a lock. Lift the rewind knob and at the base of the rewind knob is lifted from, there is a safety lock. You have to move this safety lock and lift the film rewind knob at the same time to open back.
While pushing the lock around the rewind knob counterclockwise with a finger, pull up on the film rewind knob until it clicks. Then pull up a little further until the back pops open.
