Question about Whirlpool Refrigerators

1 Answer

We bought a Whirlpoll Refrigerator, Model # G17FVCXWQ00 3 months ago. Periodically water comes out of the top right ceiling. What would cause this. It runs out quickly and stops. I estimate about 1/8th of a cup.

At she top of the refrigerator inside-right and right of the light. there are some small holes. The water comes from there. Could there be condensation above the tope ceiling? I can't recall anything we might have done or expeienced prior to the water that pous out a small stream. Of course, the only time I notice it is when I open the door. I don't recall seeing water in the refrigerator suggesting it happens when the door is closed. This has happened 3 or 4 times since we bought and installed in our home 6/25/10. Thanks for your help.

Could you please give some details on where exactly comes the water and how often. It runs after you do something specific or randomly or in standard periods?

Ice smells like mildew! We purchased the refrigerator/freezer new 6 months ago. It does not seem to be a problem caused by other foods in the freezer. Model number: FFTR2126LW

Mildew smell in your ice is caused by one of three things. 1. Old, dirty, clogged water filter 2. Bad water quality from your house water supply 3. Ice that has not been used and sits in the bucket for time can become stale tasting.

I have a whirlpool refrigerator, model GR9FHMXPQ. I got it about 4 years ago. When it was delivered, it had several pieces of styrofoam lodged in the inside ceiling of the fridge section (below the freezer...

You need to remove all of the styrofoam packing material.
Any insulation material would be installed inside the body of the fridge/freezer. The packing material is there so anything inside the compartment (like metal shelves, plastic holders, etc. don't bounce around during shipping and either scratch up the interior, or break. That is all that it is there for.

Water drips in refrigerator. I think it has to do with the defrost feature, which seems to drip only periodically.

You are correct. the defrost drain is most likely plugged up causing the water to drip into the refrigerator through the air returns in the ceiling of the fridge.
To access the defrost drain hole in your model you will have to remove the back wall from the freezer compartment and possibly the floor of the freezer as well if it has the floor air flow tray.
The repair is quite simple- remove as much of the ice as possible (i use a putty knife to pull it up in as large chunks as possible and then use a moistened dish towel to pick up the smaller pieces.
Use a turkey baster with some hot water to "plunge" the drain hole out. The drain hole is located in the bottom center of the evaporator opening.
Good luck!

Water can leak from these areas:

The inside ceiling of the refrigerator
The inside back wall of the refrigerator
Self-defrosting refrigerators usually dispose of the water generated during the defrost cycle via a tube or channel that directs the water to a pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. From the pan, the water normally evaporates. (See a more detailed explanation of this in the How Things Work section of our website).

If the tube or channel is clogged or obstructed, the water backs up and leaks into the inside of the refrigerator compartment. Then the water builds up at the bottom, inside of the refrigerator. When the water has built up for a time it may spill out of the front of the door opening. To fix this problem, clear the drain tube or channel and allow the defrost water to flow down to the drain pan.

In some refrigerators, the defrost water is intentionally directed down the back wall of the refrigerator, where it then flows to the bottom of the refrigerator compartment and out to a small drain--usually located beneath one of the drawers at the bottom of the refrigerator. If the drain becomes clogged or blocked, the water may back up. To fix this problem, clear the obstruction.
The inside ceiling of the refrigerator Water accumulating on the ceiling of the refrigerator is usually caused by a clogged drain in the freezer section beneath the evaporator. The clogged drain will cause water from the self defrost cycle to leak into the divider between the freezer and refrigerator. This water may then freeze and cause condensation build-up on the refrigerator ceiling. The solution to this problem begins with unclogging the drain. It may also be necessary to remove the entire freezer/refrigerator divider to thoroughly dry the insulation in the divider. Occasionally the insulation needs to be replaced to prevent a recurrence of the problem. This can be a big job – you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

The inside back wall of the refrigerator In some refrigerators, the water from the defrost cycle is intentionally directed down the back wall of the refrigerator, where it then flows to the bottom of the refrigerator compartment and out to a small drain - usually located beneath one of the drawers at the bottom of the refrigerator. If the drain becomes clogged or blocked, the water may back up. To fix this problem, clear the obstruction.
