Question about Sta Rite Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm High Effiency - Propane Heater - 333,000 BTU

1 Answer

I have a sta rite heater installed about a year ago, it is showing Service light on, and it ignites for a couple of minutes then begins to shut down, The gas meter has been changed a couple of times to a larger commercial meter but the problem persists. I have the pool company that installed this looking at it but i do not think they know what they are doing. i was promised that i would not have any issues with this heater at installation, its only been used less than 10 times.

If this is a propane heater and you have changed the meter that means you have natural gas. A converstion kit is avable and all it is is a washer in the gas line inside the heater. You can buy these but my wholsaler just gives them to me when I get a heater. Get your installer to do this for you first before you buy anything else. Also check the size of your gas pipe to the unit. It need's to be sized to the heater and the run of pipe. You can find this info in your book that came with the heater.

I have a sta rite 200 gas pool heater. Heater ignites and runs for about 1 minute and shuts off. After another minute it restarts.

Try removing the Thermal regulator. also make sure you have adequate water flow thru the heater. If the heater seems to run OK with the Thermal Reg removed then order a new one.

Are any of the service lights on on the back-side of the board? There are 4 possible lights that can illuminate...if any are, I need to know which ones please. If not, there is more troubleshooting required. If you would like a copy of the owner's manual which covers all these steps in detail, please send me an email using the contact feature of our site at and I'll reply with a copy of it.

The heater ignites, stays on about 20 seconds and goes off, after starting and stopping 3 times, it displays a service heater light.

It may not be detecting that ignition occurred. There is usually a sensor that detects ignition and if it is not working right the controller tells yo to service the heater. If you call Sta Rite technical support number they may be able to help you determine what device needs to be replaced. I hope this helps.

Shows r 5 code when power is turned on. sta-rite

The R5 is a sequence code in the boot up sequence where your error is occuring. There is nothing in the users manual for these pool heaters that explains this error. Your best bet, unfortunately, is going to be to call Sta Rite. Here is their customer service number: 1-800-831-7133
