Nothing is connected. No outputs, no inputs, no speakers. How much does the repair cost? Who repairs this model?

  • jhendrick Sep 07, 2010

Are schematics available for the STR D715 and STR AV900? How old are these units? Are they good quality to be worth fixing?

I repair many sonys ---protect than shutdown is either a bad speaker or shorted amplifier channel..disconnect all speakers and try it again if it stays on than its a speaker if not than your amp needs new output transisistors

hi john sorry to hear its still in protect --our shop which does huge volume that repair would be 90 dollars labor plu parts --those transistors average about 30-40 so on avg that repair approaches 150 or so call 1 800 222 sony to find a local certified service center

hey john as im a sony servicer im not too familiar with where a consumer could get the schematics --however an ohmmeter would tell you pretty quickly which channel on the heatsink is shorted-- worth it is another question i always felt they were a little light with their bass output but sounded clean nonetheless

I have the same exact recover right now as we speak. Try unplugging it for 30 sec then plug it back in. If not either you have a pinched wire or wires are touching somewhere or you turned it up to loud and it went into protect to "protect" the speakers, check connections and go from there

My STR-DE925 reciever isn't giving me any sound. When i turn it on everything works like normal, kicks on, and there is a click; but after a few seconds the display switches from whatever input it was on...

check speaker connections.sounds like the system is trying to stop some thing more serious happening by shutting itself down.a pain yes but saves blowing something up.if no luck, then definately send in for repair

Sony STR-D715 Protect Mode

Hello,
This is a common problem...
It is in fact a bad power-amp module.
I have repaired quite a few of these receivers by replacing it.
The module is inexpensive. I Googled the Part number and found several sources for it.

Good luck!

MySony str-da5000es is showing error code 11 and shut off by itself after few seconds.check and disconnect all speakers, unplugged power from wall and still showing error 11. am missing something in here...

error code 11 (protector) - According to the manual, 11/PROTECTOR means, "Irregular current is output from the speakers. Turn of the receiver, check the speaker connection and turn on the power again." Most likely, a strand of speaker wire is shorted to the chassis at one of the speaker terminals.
Hope this helps !

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

PROTECTOR APPEARS

You cannot disable it. It is meant to protect the unit from producing more power than it is designed to. When you turn it on, turn the volume all the way down. Beyond that consult the back of your manual for trouble shooting and service information.

The only way to reset protect is to eliminate the problem which activated it. Problem may be insufficient line voltage or unit's output circuit. Have unit checked out by prof, tech
