Fridge warm, freezer has frost on back panel & is defrosting, fans work, just changed defrost thermostat, no air is moving from freezer side to fridge side, drain pan under fridge is dry

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

My kenmore side-by-side refrigerator is less than 4-years old. freezer works but refrigerator stde does not get cold. ice accumulates on lower vent in refrigerator.

all it does is the evap fan blows cold air from the freezer into the fridge section and returns through the bottom air vent,so if there's ice there most likely one of the doors was left open, check the freezer for frozen water droplets on packages or on the walls and shelves of the machine,if you don't see that open the freezer door,if you don't hear the fan blowing you could have a bad evap fan motor.if the fan is blowing in the freezer from the bottom remove the second draw or bin and put your hand on the back inside wall of the freezer,if there's frost or like snow on the back wall you have a defrost problem, bad defrost thermostat, defrost heater, timer or board depending on what model you have,if the fan is blowing and you don't see any problems that i talked about you could have a bad damper,on some machines there's a damper door that opens and closes to let cold air into the fridge section,if it's bad it won't open and no cold air can blow in from the freezer,if you think the door was left open, remove anything that's in the way,in the freezer side and the fridge side, shut the machine down or unplug it and with a hair dryer melt out the ice, don't keep the heat in one place for to long, you can melt the vent if it's plastic or styrofoam, after you think it's melted out start the machine and put your hand up in the left hand corner in the fridge section and see if you can feel any cold air blowing in,there could be ice up there too, next time send the model number so i can look up your model,on a side by side you'll find the tag on the right hand side wall in the fridge up near the ceiling or on the ceiling near the light.hope this helps,if you have another fridge you could move the food and just shut the fridge down with the doors open and let it melt out on it's own overnight.good luck

Top 2 shelves not freezing

the air leaking into your freezer has caused your evaporator to overice, restricting airflow/fan blade from circulating the cold air.. the unit is now working under gravity where the cold air produce falls pushing the warmer air to the top hence the defrosting of upper shelves... the only solution for starters would be to shut the appliance down for 48hrs minimum so that it can defrost itself manually. Unless you could get a pro to remove the back panel do it. I say a pro as there are sensors and thermal fuses behind it and being temperature dependant can be ruined if not done right plus defrost heater could be tested a another possible cause...

Cold air not getting from Freezer to Fridge

I actually know nothing about refrigerators, but was able to fix the same exact problem where cold air was not getting to the fridge side of the side by side. The freezer was working just fine. I unplugged the fridge and freezer and tore all the shelving out to get behind a panel in the back of the inside of the freezer. There is a pass-through between the freezer and the refrigerator at the top back of the freezer on the side-by-side refrigerator. The passthrough was totally frozen over and blocking air from passing through and cooling the refrigerator side. I let it all de-thaw and then was able to pull the chunks of ice out, and all seems to be working great now. Be careful getting the ice chunks out as there are some controls there - it's probably best to just let it all thaw and melt by itself - which wouldn't require tearing all the shelving out. One could simply let the freezer dethaw for a day and then plug back in and both sides should work just fine.

Bottom Door Shelves and Vegetable Crispers Freezing up

I just had a similar problem, and the bottoms of both sides were cold but the top shelves were warm. I found that the condenser fan, the fan right above the cooling coils was not working. This fan circulates the cold air and if it's not working it can't move the cold air to the top or over to the refrigerator side. Open the freezer door and press the switch that tells the computer the door is closed (so the light goes out), if the fan doesn't come on shortly, or only sputters that could be the problem. You will need to take out the back cover over the coils, the ice maker tray and auger motor if you have one and some other parts. Play around with the plug where it goes into the side wall, if you can get the fan to come on and off, it's most likely a bad fan motor....about $55 to replace. As you take it apart, be sure to take some digital pics of the process so you can remember how it goes back together!

Fridge is not cold enough, freezer is working fine, but has frost

Just had the same problem with my side-by-side.

In my case, the solution was to empty the freezer side, to access a back panel INSIDE the freezer covering the fan and cooling coils. Two screws held the back panel cover on, and when I removed the panel cover I found the cooling coils to be totally iced up, preventing the flow of cold air into the fridge side. I left the freezer open for a few hours until all the ice was melted, before replacing the inside panel. (I used a blow dryer to help speed up the ice melting).

Everything's working fine now for me - good luck with yours!

Referidgerator side is not cooling?? Help?

I had this problem. Here's what I found: The cooling core on the freezer side was froze up. Covered in ice. I think the reason this happened was that the freezer door was held open by one of the slide out trays just enough to pull in outside air. Don't know how long it was like this. When I found it (and corrected it) the interior of the freezer was covered in ice crystals. From then on the refer side contents began warming up. There was no flow of cool air to the refer side from the freezer side (this cool air comes in from the freezer side fan near the top left side of the refer side). Freezer side was near zero temp and the unit ran continuously. Here's what I did: Removed everything from both sides (put it all in another fridge/freezer). Turned off (or unpluged) the fridge and left it off over night. I put towels under the fridge because there can be an over flow of water that could go to the floor. It works great again.
