Question about Skil Octo Multi Finishing Sander

I just aquired a used Skil Model 409 orbital sander and am having trouble inserting the paper. Is there a technique peculiar to this machine that?

It should be a standard hook and loop pad. If the hooks have been worn off, no paper will stick. There is a universal replacement pad available at any good hardware store; it glues on and lets you start fresh. hook and loop (velcro) is a nice fastening system as you can rapidly change papers in the midddle of your job.

If there is something else keeping the paper from attaching, please describe it more and we will get you fixed up in a jiffy:)

Thanks Farmbear. Like you indicated I guess I wasn't very clear. The sander is a Skil model 409 which is a rectangular device. It's designed so that the ends of a 3 1/2" X 9" piece of sandpaper are attached via a screw driver operated bar at each end of a felt pad that grab the paper and pulls it tight. It wouldn’t be too bad if I had three hands. One hand holds the sander, another to line up the paper and the third to twist the bar with a screw driver. It seems that there should be some way to release the bars to insert the paper then drop the bars back in place and tighten the paper with the screwdriver. What do you think?

I recently acquired a Skil Model 409 Orbital Sander. Had to contact the company in order to get a manual. They emailed me the manual in about a week. I have published that manual here: http://409skil.yolasite.com

Sorry, I was missing that part. You got it right, though. three hands is the answer. Orrr, you could go get some nice sticky back papers and cheat. They come in a variety of sizes or can be cut from full sheets. what you have there is a good sander to use while you figure out what kind of sander you want:)
Best regards, Farmerbear

OK Farmerbear, thanks for your input. I have a small Boesch circular/rotating/orbital sander that uses a Velcro type of fastening system. Do you know if that’s available for the Skil? I’ve never seen it.

There is a generic, glue on replacement pad for the 1/4 sheet sanders that lets you use the hook and eye (Velcro) sheets. I know True Value hardware stores have access to these and would bet they could be found online for the lowest price..hang on a sec, I'll look.......
ok, All I could find were the hook and loop conversions for the 5" round random orbit sanders. but you can still use the press on adhesive backed ones on your model to avoid the three hands issue.
If I find the 1/4 sheet conversion, I'll link it to you.

I am having trouble inserting the blade properly

You press the lever forward all the way, insert the blade, and release. If the holder is getting worn it can be replaced as one complete assembly. Here is the user manual link. It shows how to use the holder.

The part number for the holder assembly is 2610938752. It is less then $10 and is held on with an allen screw so it's easy to change.

How to replace the sand paper on skil sander hi speed 439

the skil 439 is a palm orbital finish sander. To replace the paper, pop the springs off the side where they take a 90 degree turn towards the work surface. To replace paper, rip a piece of standard sand paper into quarters, reverse removal and done. It's a pretty nice older sander and yes I have one.

When I use the sander, the velco-like thing underneath the paper gets chewed up looking. It's 2 days old, so whats wrong??

When using this kind of sander you have to let the machine do the work, meaning if you press on it things like that happen, if you aren't doing that then possibly too thin and cheap sandpaper attached.

How do I secure a piece of sandpaper on the dewalt orbit palm sander?

I think your model holds the paper with glue that is on the sand paper.Just take apart the back cover of the sand paper to expose the glue.

Putting Sanding paper on makita sander

A makita power planer is just what it says, a planer. It has blades that spin at high speed and remove a thin layer of wood with each pass. The orbital sanding sheets go on another tool called an orbital sander. Write back if you find the sander and can not figure out how the sheets go on it.
