The lens has become jammed with dirt / grit between the moving parts of the lens barrel and the body of the camera. This is a frequent problem - and is not covered by defect warranty. The dirt / grit will have to come out before the lens can fully extend or retract. The camera senses the lens position at start up and if the lens is not found in or fails to get to the start position within a predetermined amount of time, the camera fails with the error.

Since these are delicate devices, disassembly is discouraged. Many times, the camera will cost more to repair than it is worth, especially if it is more than a couple of years old. Call Nikon for your repair options, or deal with a local repair shop directly.

Good luck!

On my Nikon Coolpix S4000, when power is turned on, the lens extends fully, opens, retracts fully, and then closes automatically. Lens Error then appears. It does not make noises and has not been used...

I had the same problem with a similar Coolpix model. It's an error on the lens mechanism. Maybe you pressed the lens by accident while they were retracting, or something like that... It's really a delicate mechanism. I think you have to send it for a service... Sorry!

When I turn off my CoolPix S6 the lens would close completely. When I turn on my camera the lens is completely open and the screen just says lens cover error.

The lens is damaged and needs to be replaced. Sometimes with use or maybe an accidental hit to the lens can cause a malfunction to the camera resulting in that error. Also if you for example took the camera to the beach, getting something like sand in the camera can jam up the lens and prevent it from fully extending or retracting.

The words "Lens Error" appears on the viewing screen

The lens does not fully extend, that's why it tries again. The lens probably does not extend or retract because of debris or a misaligned gear box. The lens can in about 50% of the cases be repaired without having to replace it. Try to return to manufacturer first. If you're out of warranty, there are third party place that fix them such as camera lens repairs. If you want to do it yourself, there are also free camera repair guide websites that show you how to replace the lens, the replacement part is usually available on ebay.

NIKON COOLPIX

The Camera displays lens error only when it's unable to retract or expand. This usually happens when the internal Hardware that controls the lens fails or any dust particle settles around the lens. In this case, just give slight bumps to the Camera against your palm. If the issue persists then service will be required.

Nikon coolpix camera dropped. displays 'lens error' on screen

Not good news. The message indicates that the lens housing has been dented or otherwise damaged, preventing the camera from functioning. Your camera will require professional repair.

I got sand in the lens of my Nikon Coolpix L14

Take it in to be serviced. Or junk it and get a new L20 or something similar.

Lens error message on nikon coolpix L18 I purchased my Nikon L18 Cool Pix camera last September ('08). Last week when I turned it on, the lens extended fully, then retracted fully as I got a "lens error"...

Hi,
When system control does not get lens initialize signal while extending it, then it try again by folding it and extending and still no required initialize signal then generate error and stop further functions.

Please remove battery and open camera and remove flexible wire of lens mechanism from connector, there would be lock that needs to release to remove flexible wire. Clean wire terminals with alcohol, let it dry and put back flexible wire in connector and lock it. Now put battery and power camera up, hopefully lens will work properly.

Thanks.

Lens Error on NIkon CoolPix L2

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.
